Former Pakistan bowler Waqar Younis is reportedly set to be offered a very important role by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The Pakistan great is in line to become PCB's new Chief Cricket Officer (CCO).
He was initially appointed as an Advisor to the chairman of the PCB. And according to a report in the PTI, the appointment is a precursor to a more permanent and influential position. While recent reports stated that the role was merely an advisory one, the PTI has reported that Waqar Younis' new role is a paid one and he will be playing a big role for Pakistan cricket in the coming days.
The PCB wants the former Pakistan captain to discharge duties that Rob Key does for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Key is the managing director of the England men's team. Key is responsible for most of the big decisions for the England team and Waqar Younis is likely to have a similar role.
The new role could see the former cricketer's involvement in team selection, making central contract policies, and shaping other policies for the betterment of Pakistan cricket across all formats and levels. Waqar Younis has experience as a player, captain, and coach and could turn out to be a good appointment for PCB.
Pakistan team's dismal performance:
The PCB will be desperate for a change in the fortunes of the Pakistan cricket team. The Men in Green have been facing heavy criticism from the fans after their dismal displays in recent times. In the last one year or so, Pakistan endured disastrous campaigns in two World Cups.
Last year, they failed to progress ahead of the league stage in the ODI World Cup. Last month, the Babar Azam-led side exited the T20 World Cup at the group stage after suffering losses against the USA and India.
Between these two World Cup campaigns, they lost the Test series in Australia, and the T20I series in New Zealand before drawing the home T20I series against a second-string New Zealand side. They also lost a T20I against Ireland before losing the T20I series against England in May. Pakistan will be in action next when they host Bangladesh for a Test series.
