Eoin Morgan, one of the players most responsible for modernizing the game, announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect and said goodbye to England. It was the ideal time, and Morgan, who has been suffering from his form and fitness for the past 18 months, said he didn’t think for a second that he was coming out too early.

Morgan remarked in a press conference at Lord’s on Tuesday that everyone had assured him that he would know when the moment was perfect because there would be a proper setting and occasion, and the just-completed series against the Netherlands was it.

Everything Must Come To An End: Eoin Morgan

In a video shared by England Cricket, Morgan said, “Everything must come to an end. I have been open and honest the last three years about when this day would come. I have spoken to a lot of people that have been through this transition particularly in our sport.

Each one of them to a man said that there will be a time and place that it will just hit you like a ton of bricks or the answer I got and most common was ‘You’ll know’.

“When we were in Amsterdam, it hit me quite hard. And, I am glad that I was in a good enough space to realise what I was going through and accepting it. I was quite sad the day that it hit me but since then I have been very happy, very content, unbelievably proud not only as a player but as a captain,” he added.

Morgan finished his career as the most successful captain of the 2019 winners and the only one to win a World Cup for his country, leading England to 76 victories in 126 ODI matches.

Eoin Morgan Applauds Jos Buttler

Due to a groyne ailment, Morgan was unable to participate in the third game of the series, but after scoring two ducks in each of the first two games he did play, it appeared that the finish was closer than anybody had anticipated.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Morgan praised Jos Buttler, who has served as his stand-in in white-ball cricket for the longest period, noting that he commands respect within the team not just as a batsman but also as a leader.

“Jos has been in charge, he’s been an unbelievable good vice-captain while I’ve been captain, and when he’s stepped in he’s been an exceptional leader. He obviously commands himself with the bat as one of the best players in the world, but also as a leader within the group he commands tremendous respect,” he said.
