Washington Sundar delivered a memorable performance and helped India to draw the fourth Test against England at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester. On the final day, Washington Sundar stitched an unbeaten 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja.
Sundar and Jadeja ended up scoring unbeaten centuries as they shook hands with England for a draw in the fourth Test in Manchester. It was Sundar’s maiden international century, coming off 206 balls with nine boundaries and a six against England at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Washington Sundar shines with maiden Test ton in England
The Indian all-rounder’s calm and determined knock under pressure has been praised by fans and cricket experts. However, his father, M. Sundar, expressed mixed emotions.
However, he was proud of his son's match-saving effort, but at the same time, he shared concerns that Washington’s consistent performances are often ignored by the national selectors.

Senior Sundar has pointed out that Washington has not been given regular chances in the Indian cricket team despite doing well in past matches, including an unbeaten 85 on a tough Chennai pitch and 96* in Ahmedabad against England in 2021.
Father slams Indian selectors for ignoring Washington Sundar's performances
He also highlighted how the Indian all-rounder wasn’t selected for the first Test in England and argued that other players get more chances even after poor performances, whereas Washington is dropped after just one or two failures.
M Sundar was quoted as saying by The Times of India: “Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances; only my son doesn't get them.
He should consistently bat at No.5 like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first test against England. The selectors should watch his performances.”

Washington Sundar’s father slams unfair treatment by Indian selectors
He questioned the treatment of Sundar and believes that he should be given a proper run at number five in the batting order, just like in the second innings in Manchester, and should get at least five to ten continuous chances. The father noted that Washington has grown mentally stronger through all the ups and downs, and that strength is now showing in his performances.
Sundar’s father added, “My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Has this kind of approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this, and the result is the performance that people are witnessing now.”
Washington Sundar’s father slams IPL teams for lack of support
Washington Sundar’s father also recalled how the spinner was benched for 11 consecutive matches by RCB in IPL 2019 despite his strong performances in the Nidahas Trophy. When he moved to SRH in 2022, he impressed with a quick 40 in his debut match but was pushed down the order in the next game. Even with the Gujarat Titans in 2025, he hasn’t received regular chances.
Unlike some players who get consistent backing from the IPL team, Washington hasn’t been given the same support, and the emotional father urged the national selectors and team to value his son’s talent and give him a longer rope both at the highest level and in domestic cricket.
He signed off by saying, “Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in the case of domestic cricket.”
