Pakistan’s white-ball struggles have hit a new low, and Wasim Akram has called for drastic changes after they suffered a six-wicket defeat against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on February 23.
The legendary fast bowler expressed his frustration with outdated strategies and poor performances and urged the Pakistan selectors to bring in fearless young talent and start rebuilding for the 2026 T20 World Cup, as they are already on the brink of elimination from the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Wasim Akram demands bold changes amidst Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 crisis
Wasim Akram said on Sports Central, “Enough is enough. We have been playing archaic cricket in white-ball for ages. We have lost by wide balls over the last couple of years. Now it is time to take bold steps."
"What would that be? Bring fearless cricketers, young blood, into the white-ball format. If you have to make five or six changes, please do so. You keep losing for the next six months. It's fine, but start building a team for the 2026 T20 World Cup from now onwards.”
The former Pakistan captain slammed the PCB and the selectors for making the poor performers their stars and for giving a lot of opportunities to them despite the results being just overwhelming.
He mentioned how Pakistani bowlers have been unable to take wickets effectively in the last five ODIs, where they have managed to get 24 wickets at an average of 60.
That means the bowlers conceded 60 runs per wicket. Pakistan has now the second-lowest bowling average among 14 international teams including associate nations Oman and the USA.
Meanwhile, Akram urged the PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi to ask the coach Aaqib Javed, captain Mohammad Rizwan, and the selectors about the Champions Trophy squad selections.

He also slammed the selection of Khusdil Shah and Salam Ali Agha as they were never seen among the wickets. The legendary cricketer also blamed Mohammad Rizwan for the Men in Green’s humiliating performance in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Wasim Akram said that if he cannot recognize match-winners, the team will continue to sink further into embarrassment. Akram added, “I have been literally shouting for weeks that this squad is not good, but the chairman said they have assembled the best squad.
A day before the Champions Trophy, they had a meeting for an hour, but they came out with the same squad. Even the captain (Rizwan) is to blame. He is the leader of the ship and if he doesn’t know what kind of match-winner he needs. It’s getting embarrassing now.”

The cricket pundit also mentioned how the frustration among fans has reached an all-time high, with many leaving the stadium early, as they were unable to watch Pakistan cricket’s humiliation on the field in the ongoing prestigious tournament.
Wasim signed off by saying, “You should have seen the faces of Pakistan fans who were at the stadium. They left the venue after 15 overs when Pakistan was bowling against India. I have never seen anything like that in my life. It’s unfortunate. We, as a nation, are very passionate. But it’s frustrating.”
