Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer backed Virat Kohli to come out good in the later stages of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He said that when the tournament moves to the business end, the batter will show his true colors and greatness.
The ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 isn't going in Virat Kohli's way. The India batter has looked terribly out of form in the tournament and his poor outings at the top are one of the major reasons why Team India is struggling to get good starts and is losing wickets early at the top.
Coming into the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat Kohli looked in a rich vein of form. He opened the innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2024 and looked nothing short of exceptional. The opening batter set the stage on fire and racked up 741 runs, ending up as the leading run-getter in the tournament.
Considering his form while opening the batting, India team management promoted up to the top order and asked him to open. The move, however, hasn't worked for the team yet. Virat Kohli has failed in all the three games that India has played and has perished inside the first few overs in power play.
Virat Kohli has scored just five runs from three innings and has registered scores of 1, 4 & 0. With India qualifying for the Super 8 stage of the tournament, his poor form will be one of the biggest causes of concern for the team, especially in a stage where the team cannot afford to lose the match.
Wasim Jaffer made a bold statement, claiming that one shouldn't write off Virat Kohli and pointed out that he along with Rohit Sharma has struggled because the pitches at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York are tough. He also added that Kohli will be the leading run-getter by the time the tournament ends. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
"Rohit and Virat have been playing on the tough New York pitch so they aren't quite among the top run-scorers. But do not write off Virat Kohli. As the tournament gets to its business end, he will show his true colours and he will show his greatness. I had picked Virat Kohli as the highest run-scorer and I will stick to him."
I don't think Virat Kohli should bat at No. 3 - Wasim Jaffer
Despite the failures at the top, Wasim Jaffer backed Virat Kohli to open the innings because according to him India have found a good No.3 in Rishabh Pant. While explaining about the same, he elaborated:
"I don't think Virat Kohli should bat at No. 3. He should continue to open because now you have got Rishabh Pant at No. 3 and now it has been working out well. You ideally want a left-hand right-hand opening combination and while you have Jaiswal, that doesn't seem possible."
India has won three out of their three games in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. They have booked their berth for the Super 8 stage and will be playing their last League game against Canada. It will be a great opportunity for Virat Kohli to regain his form and head into the next stage on high.
