Marcus Stoinis smashes 34 off 11

Stoinis was demoted in the batting order by the Ricky Ponting-led team management after his middling outings in the first few matches of the Indian Premier League.

He came out to bat at the No.7 and played an impactful knock to send a message to the skipper and the head coach. He slammed a brutal 34 runs off just 11 balls. His innings was studded with 1 four and 4 sixes.

The knock played by Marcus Stoinis helped the Punjab Kings register a colossal total of 245/6 on the board, which was their second-highest score in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Highest total for PBKS in IPL

262/2 vs KKR, Kolkata, 2024

245/6 vs SRH, Hyderabad, 2025*

243/5 vs GT, Ahmedabad, 2025

232/2 vs RCB, Dharamsala, 2011

231/4 vs CSK, Cuttack, 2014

The best of Stoinis came in the 20th over of the innings when he took Mohammed Shami to the cleaners. On the first ball of the over, Marco Jansen gave the strike to Stoinis with a single.

Then, on the second ball, Stoinis took a double before going berserk on the next four balls. He hit a 93m six on the third ball and followed it up with a big six over deep mid-wicket. After that, Stoinis hit a colossal 96m six and finished off the over with another six over deep square leg.

The assault by Stoinis led to Shami finishing his spell with the figures of 0/75. This was the worst-ever spell by an Indian in the history of the Indian Premier League and, overall, the second worst behind Jofra Archer's 0/76. Not only this, Shami also recorded the second worst bowling figures ever by an Indian man in recorded T20 cricket, only behind Sikkim's Roshan Kumar, who had conceded 2/81 during SMAT 2024.

Most expensive bowling returns in IPL history:

0/76 - Jofra Archer (RR) vs SRH, Hyderabad, 2025

0/75 - Mohammed Shami (SRH) vs PBKS, Hyderabad, 2025*

0/73 - Mohit Sharma (GT) vs DC, Delhi, 2024

0/70 - Basil Thampi (SRH) vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2018

0/69 - Yash Dayal (GT) vs KKR, Ahmedabad, 2023

Danny Morrison shares views on Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo ahead of the SRH vs PBKS clash, Danny Morrison was asked to share his views on Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell. He stated:

"Sack them, get rid of them. No, no, no, no, get rid of them (laughs). Look, they're class too. And the way Maxi goes about it, I think it was out first ball, trying to reverse sweep early on in the tournament. But that's how he plays. Again, exerting confidence. I mean, he's got it in spades. But we're all human and players, and we know what it's been like when you're under the pump. So, I mean, he could easily come good.

"Stoinis, I mean, yeah, again, his bowling, again, and bits and both. But Maxi, isn't he one of those golden arms too? He's a bit like how Glenn Phillips is for the Blackcaps in recent times. A go-to guy that can suddenly get you a breakthrough and change the course of an innings."
