Former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra made a funny dig towards the DRS technology being used in the ongoing Pakistan Super League season 9. He took to X (formerly Twitter) and uploaded a video of his reaction to seeing Rilee Rossouw being given not out through a technological blunder. The Hawkeye system changed the entire impact of where the ball struck on the batter’s pad.

A similar incident took place in the second edition of WPL last night when RCB Women’s were taking on the UP Warriorz. During the 3rd ball of the 7th over, Georgia Wareham bowled a leg-break delivery which Warriorz batter Chamari Athapaththu tried to sweep away.

However, she missed the entire length and closed her bat way too early as the ball came and struck the pads. The initial view showed that the ball would be going down to miss the leg stump. However, in contrary to everyone’s expectation, the ball tracking projected Wareham’s delivery as a Googly that went straight into the middle-stump line. It created quite a stir in the Warriorz dugout as everyone was left baffled.

Aakash Chopra would then post on X – a short clip of Wareham’s leg-break delivery and a picture of what Hawkeye projected. To describe the incident, he cautioned that he would like to hear DRS’ explanation on the same and brought back the Joe Root incident.

A fan then commented below his post, “Just like typical DRS tech in India works we have seen in England series especially the delivery against Root at 4th test.”

In response, Chopra resurfaced his video mocking PSL 9’s DRS technology which kept Rilee Rossouw away from getting out.

What exactly happened in that PSL 9 match?

It was match number 8 between the Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United in the early days of PSL 9. The Gladiators were batting 2nd and were chasing down a low total of 139 for the win. They were already in a tough situation after losing 4 wickets for just 54.

It was up to the shoulders of skipper Rilee Rossouw to get his team over the line. Rossouw’s innings could have ended much earlier before he led the Quetta-based outfit toward the win. He was not removed from the crease because of what the DRS ball tracking showed. The ball pitched well outside off and from the first instance, it looked as if the ball would keep moving on the same line and drift into the middle and leg.

However, ball tracking showed that the ball took an unnatural and wild turn outside off instead of drifting in. That was a shell shock for everyone who watched it. Regardless of how many times one sees that video, the incident would always feel uncanny as well as weird and such was Aakash Chopra’s reaction.

Aakash Chopra when he saw the video of that PSL 9 match, thought that the ball impact would be the case that could save Rossouw. But upon seeing what had happened, his reaction was priceless.

“Impact, it will be a case of impact, it is in line and outside.” – Chopra said after seeing the LBW incident before the ball tracking came. This went the other man. I mean how? Whatever the Hawkeye’s having I want to have it too. It is great stuff, no one could understand.” – Aakash Chopra said via his X account.

Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan’s hot take

After the Quetta Gladiators claimed victory by 3 wickets and 10 balls remaining, Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan was fuming in anger. He felt that the technology made a huge mistake and that it ensured his team had been kept away from victory. Shadab also appealed to the PCB to look into it as he felt these blunders should not be happening in the world’s best T20 tournament after IPL.

I think technology made a mistake,” a visibly angry Shadab said. “The ball-tracking showed a different delivery, and it was a match-changing moment. These sorts of things should be sorted out properly in such a big tournament.”

“These mistakes should not happen. I bowled four overs here as a legspinner, and I don’t think the ball was spinning here. And they showed Agha’s delivery hitting outside off stump and spinning away. I don’t buy that.” – Shadab Khan had said after Islamabad and Quetta clashed in PSL 9.
