Akash Deep ends Ben Duckett's explosive innings

English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett came out all guns blazing on Day 2 and demolished the Indian pace bowling unit with their attacking brand of cricket.

The Bazballing openers didn't let the Indian bowlers settle and played some unorthodox shots along with aggressive batting to build a solid 92-run stand in 78 balls.

Duckett fell to Akash Deep on the fifth ball of the 13th over while going for an aggressive reverse scoop. Akash Deep bowled a fullish delivery, nipping away to Duckett, who tried to continue his reverse-scoop rampage.

However, this time, he was unable to execute the shot properly and edged one behind straight into the gloves of the Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.

Akash Deep celebrated aggressively right in front of Duckett with a fist pump and then put his arm around the shoulder of the English opener.

There were a few words exchanged between Duckett and Akash as the English opener walked. Although it was controlled aggression, KL Rahul made sure that the send-off didn't create drama and pulled the pacer back.

Ben Duckett got out after scoring 45 runs off 38 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Overall, in First-class cricket at The Oval, he has scored 2984 runs in 49 innings at an average of 74.60, with 12 tons and 9 fifties.

However, he has struggled against Deep in Test cricket, getting out four times in five innings and 55 balls while scoring 40 runs.

I’m not so sure the bowler should be putting his arm around the batter - Michael Atherton

Speaking on Sky Sports, former skipper Michael Atherton was furious seeing Deep's send-off to Duckett.

“I’m not so sure the bowler should be putting his arm around the batter having got him out, regardless of whether that is in good spirits or not. He was rightly dragged away," Atherton said.

“It was a thrill-a-minute innings from Duckett. It is not often you see an opener playing a reverse scoop to get out in a Test match and still being applauded on his way back," former India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said about the wicket.

Atherton further labelled Deep's send-off as unnecessary, while Dinesh Karthik felt it was not the right thing to do.

“He's given Duckett a bit of a send-off, which is probably unnecessary, but it's the wicket that India desperately wanted. How many times did a bowler put his arm around after dismissing you, DK?,” said Atherton

“I'm not sure if this is the right way to send off a batter, especially after you've got him out. Not many batsmen would behave the way Ben Duckett did, or rather did. It looked like they knew each other really well," said Dinesh Karthik.
