Indian spinner Deepti Sharma played a pivotal role in securing a crucial breakthrough during the one-off Test match against England at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Deepti Sharma dismissed England’s wicketkeeper Amy Jones in an unusual manner on Day 2.

The Indian team posted a mammoth total of 428 runs in 104.3 overs after opting to bat first in the match. Debutants Shubha Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68) starred with the bat. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur fell short of her maiden half-century, scoring 49 runs.

Deepti Sharma Dismisses Amy Jones In First Innings

Deepti Sharma bowled a shorter delivery that Amy Jones attempted to play through mid-wicket off her back foot in the first innings. The ball struck the helmet of Smriti Mandhana at short leg, and it lobbed off, with Shafali Verma making a simple catch at leg slip.

The Indian fielders and bowler Deepti Sharma were jubilant at securing another wicket, while Amy Jones expressed disbelief as she walked back to the pavilion. The right-handed batter scored 12 runs off 19 balls with the help of two boundaries before being dismissed.

England Bowled Out For 136 Runs In First Innings

England had a promising start with a score of 108/3 at one stage. However, Deepti Sharma shifted the momentum with the crucial wickets of Danni Wyatt and Amy Jones. She dismissed Sophie Ecclestone, Kate Cross, and Lauren Filer, securing her maiden Test five-wicket haul.

Sneh Rana played a significant role in England’s collapse, dismissing Charlotte Dean and Nat Sciver-Brunt. The visiting team lost their last seven wickets for only 28 runs. They were bowled out for 136, giving India a substantial lead of 292 runs in the first innings.

The hosts opted not to enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again. Team India aim to set a significant target, providing ample time to bowl out the visitors once again. This strategic decision is intended to consolidate India’s advantage in the ongoing Test match.
