Asitha Fernando, on Saturday (July 27), came up with a stunning catch to send back Shubman Gill in the ongoing first T20I between Sri Lanka and India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bowl first against the reigning world champions. However, the Sri Lanka bowlers failed to provide any early breakthrough to their team as India were off to a flying start.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal came out all guns blazing to start the Suryakumar Yadav era in style. The openers went for the big shots right from the word go as Team India's new approach in T20Is after the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach was clearly visible. Jaiswal hit one four while Gill hit two fours in the very first over to set the tone.

India raced away to 50 runs in just 4 overs as the openers matched each other shot for shot. The powerplay was also ending on a brilliant note for Team India as Gill hit Dilshan Madushanka for two fours and a six in the first five deliveries of the sixth over.

However, Sri Lanka managed to end the powerplay on a high by getting rid of Shubman Gill. On the final ball of the sixth over, Asitha Fernando came up with a fine effort to send the India opener back. Madushanka bowled a slower delivery just outside the off stump and Gill wanted to hit it straight over the bowler's head.

However, the India opener was a bit early into the shot and ended up miscuing the ball straight back over the bowler. Asitha Fernando initially hesitated to go for the catch but was quick to change his mind and eventually pulled off a brilliant catch.

Watch the catch to dismiss Shubman Gill:

Gill departed after scoring 34 runs off 16 balls with the help of 6 fours and a six. Meanwhile, India lost the wicket of Jaiswal on the very next delivery after Gill's departure. Wanindu Hasaranga sent back Jaiswal to help Sri Lanka claw their way back into the game. Jaiswal scored 40 runs off 21 balls.
