Azam Khan made a massive blunder behind the stumps, and it proved too costly for the Desert Vipers as Rovman Powell made the most of the mishap and went on to play a fabulous knock to guide the Dubai Capitals to their maiden ILT20 championship title.

The drama unfolded in the ILT20 2025 final during the second delivery of the eighth over during the Dubai Capitals’ chase against the Desert Vipers on Sunday (February 9). The simple stumping took an unexpected turn, all thanks to the Pakistani keeper, and eventually affected the outcome of the game.

Rovman Powell capitalizes on Azam Khan’s error to lead Dubai Capitals to ILT20 glory

Nathan Sowter bowled a leg-side delivery to Rovman Powell, who came charging down the track but missed the ball. However, the Desert Vipers’ wicketkeeper Azam Khan collected it quickly and cleanly, removing the bails to find Powell short of his crease to end his stay.

But the replays revealed that Azam had moved his hands in front of the stumps while collecting the ball, which isn’t allowed. It was a close call, but the TV umpire felt that Azam had collected the ball beside the stumps and ruled it as a no-ball.

Rovman Powell had already started walking back to the dugout, and he had almost reached there when the umpire recalled him and allowed him to continue his innings in the ILT20 2025 Final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Powell was given a free hit, which he smashed for a six, adding salt to the Desert Vipers’ wound.

It was a huge error in a high-stakes final, and Dubai Capitals found themselves on the lucky side, but it proved costly for the Vipers team. Azam Khan’s mistake behind the stumps played a significant role in Desert Vipers’ title loss, as Powell capitalized on his second chance.

Powell went on to play a spectacular knock of 63 runs off 38 balls, including seven fours and three sixes and helped Dubai Capitals win the ILT20 final by four wickets with four balls to spare against the Desert Vipers. His explosive innings led Dubai to their first-ever title in the ILT20.

Powell was adjudged Player of the Match for his match-winning knock in the ILT20 2025 Final. The West Indies hard hitter and captain said that it was really a privilege for him to represent Dubai in the summit clash. Reacting to Azam’s erroneous stumping, Powell said that he was just lucky to get another chance in the match and help his team win the title.

Rovman Powell said at the post-match presentation, “It feels really good. Did not get many chances earlier, but I keep believing when it is crunch time, crunch players come to the party. We have done a lot of work back home; credit to the coaching team, we have a fantastic camaraderie in the group.

"You need to have a little bit of luck, and I got it. It is about control, and I got the boundaries. I'm captain of my country, and lots of guys look up to me. I'm from a humble background, and to be playing a final in Dubai is a privilege.”
