England skipper Ben Stokes achieved an unwanted record with the bat during the first innings of the ongoing second Test match against India at Edgbaston. During the opening session on Day 3, India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj dismissed Stokes for a golden duck, the first such dismissal in his Test career.

Team India posted a massive first-innings total of 587 in Birmingham. Skipper Shubman Gill scored 269 runs, while Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89) chipped in with crucial runs. In response, England were 77 for 3 at stumps. Akash Deep struck twice, while Mohammed Siraj picked up one wicket.

Ben Stokes Registers Unwanted Batting Record in 2nd Test

India began Day 3 (Friday, July 4) on a high note, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a game-changing over early in the session. He removed Joe Root for 22 and then dismissed Ben Stokes on the very next delivery, leaving England reeling at 84 for 5. The double blow gave the visiting team control of the match.

Siraj dismissed a well-set Joe Root for 22 with a length delivery down the leg side. Root edged the ball to Rishabh Pant, who took a sharp catch. Siraj then bowled a short delivery, and Stokes couldn’t move away in time, ending up fending the ball off the splice of the bat. Pant completed a simple catch.

With this dismissal, Ben Stokes was dismissed for a golden duck for the first time in his Test career. Stokes had scored 20 and 33 runs in the first Test, where England secured a victory to take a 1-0 lead.

Mohammed Siraj Under Scrutiny for His Recent Performances

Mohammed Siraj had faced criticism for his recent performances, despite finishing as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the series against Australia, behind Jasprit Bumrah. Many felt he didn’t provide enough support to Bumrah throughout that series.

He recorded underwhelming figures of 2/122 and 0/51 in the first Test against England, which further raised doubts about his place in the starting XI. However, Siraj answered his critics with an impressive showing in the first innings of the second Test.

Notably, his best performances have come when Bumrah has not been part of the playing XI.

“Siraj averages 34 in Tests when Jasprit Bumrah is in India’s XI and 26 when he isn’t. And that’s despite 17 of his 23 Tests alongside Bumrah coming in SENA compared to just 3 out of his 15 non-Bumrah Tests,” a stat stated.

England Bowlers Struggled to Contain India’s Batting Line-up

Earlier, England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first. India lost the early wickets of KL Rahul (2) and Karun Nair (31) in the first session, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill steadied the innings.

After Jaiswal’s dismissal, Gill brought up his second century of the series. At 211 for 5, India were in a tricky position, but Gill and Ravindra Jadeja turned the game around with a 203-run partnership. Washington Sundar contributed 42 lower down the order.

England’s bowling attack struggled for breakthroughs, with Shoaib Bashir taking three wickets, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue claimed two each.
