In a heart-stopping moment, India National Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill copped a nasty blow from a fiery delivery by Ben Stokes that sent shockwaves through both camps on Day 5 of the ongoing fourth Test match between India and England at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester.
The incident unfolded on the very first ball of the 73rd over of India’s innings. Facing Ben Stokes, Shubman Gill was hit by a fierce lifter, angling in on a good length. The ball exploded off the top of his thumb and into the side of his helmet, just inches away from crashing onto the stumps.

Despite having the line covered perfectly, the sudden bounce made it impossible for the Indian captain to react in time. Following the dramatic moment, a wincing Gill instinctively threw the ball away to save his wicket. Thankfully, the ball hit the helmet grille.

Right after getting hit, Gill threw his bat to the side and looked in a lot of pain. The physio came out to check Gill’s hand and also tested him for a possible concussion. Meanwhile, a visibly concerned Ben Stokes checked on the young Indian skipper.
Later, Gill gave the thumbs-up to continue the play.

Shubman Gill escapes LBW blow as Ben Stokes battles pain on Day 5
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill narrowly avoided getting out at the crucial phase of the match in the same over in Manchester. Stokes bowled a tricky delivery that stayed very low, and Gill just managed to block it with the bottom of his bat. If he had missed, he would’ve been LBW out for sure.
After the delivery, Stokes was seen holding his left hamstring and pressing his shoulder, showing signs of discomfort. He has been looking in pain since the start of Day 5, but the captain kept bowling to make sure India remains under pressure in the ongoing fourth Test.

Mind games begin in Manchester as Harry Brook tries to unsettle Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar
On the other hand, things got heated on the field as England batter Harry Brook tried to play mind games with Indian batters Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar on Day 5 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. It all started when Gill didn’t take an easy single to midwicket.
Brook, standing at slip, quickly started teasing Gill by saying, “Swapping ends now, Shubbers!” suggesting that the right-handed batter didn’t want to face the tough deliveries from the James Anderson End, where the ball was bouncing strangely.
Brook didn’t stop there, as he then turned to Sundar and reminded him that fast bowler Jofra Archer was about to bowl soon, clearly trying to make him nervous. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope joined in with Brook too, throwing a few words after Sundar mistimed a big shot and only got a single.
The England players were trying hard to shake up the Indian batters with their words. But with so much at stake, Gill and Sundar have been trying to stay calm and focused amid the chatter, as they are aiming to tire the English bowler out to have any possibility to draw the Manchester Test.
