Indian captain Virat Kohli’s maiden International innings of 2021 did not turn out the way he and his millions of fans would have imagined.
The Indian skipper managed a painstaking 48-ball 11 before he was caught at short-leg off the bowling of Dom Bess.
It was a beautiful piece of bowling from the young England off-spinner. Tossing it up outside off, Bess got the ball to spin sharply.
Kohli pressed forward and pushed at the ball that he wouldn’t have imagined turning. To Kohli’s dismay, it did, and Ollie Pope completed the rest by taking a sharp catch at short-leg.
With Virat back in the hut, India are under real pressure at the Chepauk. Chasing England’s first innings total of 578, the hosts have already lost three wickets which includes the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, both of whom were dismissed by Jofra Archer before the Lunch break.
And, if the wicket of Virat Kohli wasn’t enough, Dom Bess dealt another body blow to the hosts in his very next over- this time thanks to his skipper Joe Root who took a blinder of a catch at short cover to dismiss vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.
