Afghanistan's left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi was on song with the new ball on Friday's (August 9) match between London Spirit and Manchester Originals in Hundred 2024. While playing at the iconic Lord's, the left-arm quick showed why he is regarded as one of the best new ball bowlers in white-ball cricket in recent times.

During the second innings of the match when London Spirit were batting, Farooqi was given the new ball and he responded brilliantly. Firstly, he dismissed Spirit opener Michael Pepper off a well-disguised slower ball, which he chipped straight to the cover fielder.

It was just the start that Manchester Originals wanted from their lead pacer. Farooqi grew in confidence and bowled a perfect inswinger to Spirit's No. 3 batter Ollie Pope in the next ball. He pitched the ball on a good length at the line of the stumps.

Facing his first ball of the match, Pope was clearly not prepared for it as the ball came in sharply off a length to knock over the middle and off stumps. England's Test vice-captain had no answers for the delivery as Farooqi wheeled away in his trademark celebration.

It was a perfect bowling performance with the new ball from the Afghanistan star. He bowled a slower ball first up and then bowled a perfect inswinger, which shows his skillsets and his improvement over the past few years.

After impressing with the new ball, Fazalhaq Farooqi came back at the death to pick up the huge wicket of Andre Russell which almost sealed the victory for Manchester Originals. Farooqi finished with figures of 3-24 in 20 balls as Manchester Originals won the match by 12 runs.

Fazalhaq Farooqi's recent form

Fazalhaq Farooqi has been having a great time with the ball recently. The left-arm seamer has shown tremendous improvement in his bowling after a tough start to his international career.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, Farooqi finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament alongside India's Arshdeep Singh with 17 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 9.41 and an economy rate of 6.31. Farooqi picked up a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul in this tournament. He played a key role in Afghanistan's historic path to the semi-finals.

London Spirit knocked out of Hundred 2024

Talking about the match, London Spirit won the toss and elected to field first. Manchester Originals struggled to get going with the bat but skipper Phil Salt scored a perfect half-century while opening. Salt scored 58 off 41 balls while Max Holden scored a valuable 38 off 29 balls while batting at No. 3. Seamers Richard Gleeson and Ollie Pope picked up two wickets apiece for London Spirit.

Chasing 136 to win, the Originals were rocked early by Fazalhaq Farooqi. There were just two significant scores in their innings and those were from Keaton Jennings and Shimron Hetmyer. Opener Jennings remained unbeaten on 61 off 50 balls while Hetmyer scored 44 off 35 balls. But it was not enough as London Spirit lost the match at home by 12 runs.

This was the Manchester Originals' first win of the season. With this defeat, London Spirit joined Manchester Originals to be the second team to be knocked out of the tournament.
