Team India under head coach Gautam Gambhir will play a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka between July 27-August 7. The Indian side landed in Sri Lanka on Monday, July 22.

Suryakumar Yadav has been named the new T20I skipper under Gautam Gambhir. He and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke in detail about the decision making naming SKY as the T20I skipper as opposed to Hardik Pandya who was primed to succeed Rohit Sharma as the T20I skipper of the side. Hardik was the vice-captain of the Indian side that won the T20 World Cup.

Shubman Gill was named the vice-captain of this T20I side with Ajit Agarkar seeing in him a potential captain across formats. He also deemed Gill as someone who is an all-format player for the Indian team.

Before departing for Sri Lanka, Gambhir and Agarkar addressed the Indian media in Mumbai and spoke about matters from team selection to naming captain and vice-captain.

Gautam Gambhir gave a blueprint of what the new Indian T20I team will look like under him. He also spoke about why certain players were rested and on Jasprit Bumrah's workload and Mohammed Shami's comeback as well.

Given that the series against Sri Lanka starts with the T20Is, the decision behind SKY over Hardik as the T20I skipper was the most commonly asked question. Ajit Agarkar explained the reason behind this rational decision saying Hardik's fitness standards have prompted the management to pick Surya as the skipper as they wanted someone who will be on the park throughout the match.

"Obviously, you want a captain that is likely to play all the games. We think he's [Suryakumar Yadav] a deserving candidate, over time we'll see how he develops into the role," Agarkar said in a press conference on Monday (July 22).

Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, and Sanju Samson are only part of the T20I squad. All four players are expected to play all three matches. Rishabh Pant too is a part of the T20I squad and played all the T20 World Cup matches ahead of Sanju Samson. His inclusion gives a new angle to the playing XI selection.

The ODI side sees the return of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer after a long layoff. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will join the squad along with the others picked in the ODI series before the series starts. This is India's first series after the T20 World Cup where India's full-strength squad is available.
