The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 match between India and Pakistan began on a tense note at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 5. After the Asia Cup 2025 drama, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana refused to shake hands at the toss.
In the recent Asia Cup 2025, the Indian cricket team avoided handshakes with Pakistan players. Even they were not involved in any pre-match or post-match pleasantries throughout the tournament.

On Sunday, Harmanpreet Kaur and Fatima Sana continued the no-handshake trend that began during the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE last month. Both captains completed the formality and then walked back to their dressing rooms without greeting each other in Colombo.

It is being said that the Indian women’s cricket team followed guidance from the BCCI, deciding against the customary gesture of sportsmanship in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 match in Colombo.

For Women’s Cricket, the ICC rules do not make handshakes mandatory, and teams are only penalized if their conduct violates the spirit of the game.
Well, Pakistan Women won the toss and invited India Women to bat first in Colombo.
Pahalgam terror attack and India-Pakistan tension
Notably, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives and the subsequent Operation Sindoor. These events have spilled over into cricket, with India refusing to shake hands with Pakistan in all three Asia Cup 2025 encounters.

Ever since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India and Pakistan have been playing their matches in the neutral venues for ICC and ACC tournaments, a policy set to continue until 2027. As part of this arrangement, Pakistan will play all their matches in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Colombo.

Meanwhile, Pakistan made one change in their playing XI for the big match, bringing in Shadaf Shamas to replace Omaima Sohail. On the other hand, India has also made one change, as Amanjot Kaur missed out on the game due to illness.
Renuka Singh Thakur replaced Kaur in the playing XI.

India XI: Pratika Rawal, Smriti Mandhana, Harleen Deol, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (w), Sneh Rana, Kranti Gaud, Shree Charani, and Renuka Singh Thakur.
India Women aims to continue perfect ODI record against Pakistan
On the other hand, the Indian team has a perfect record against Pakistani women in ODIs, winning all 11 encounters so far. When batting first, India has dominated in seven matches, winning by an average of 138 runs.
India has comfortably won the games with an average of 8 wickets in hand and 26 overs remaining in four matches while chasing. In World Cup clashes, India has been equally dominant, winning all four meetings against Pakistan.
