Horrible scenes unfolded during the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 clash between the Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka Women's National Cricket Team and Nat Sciver-Brunt-led England Women's National Cricket Team.
Sri Lanka Women's National Cricket Team captain Chamari Athapaththu was stretchered off the field after getting injured at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 11.
Chamari Athapaththu stretchered off
Batting first in the England Women vs Sri Lanka Women, which is the 12th match of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, the English team posted a colossal score of 253/9 on the board.
The skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt, led from the front and played an incredible knock of 117. However, she didn't receive good support from the other batters who fell for low scores.
While chasing the target, Sri Lanka got off to a horrible start as their skipper and best batter Chamari Athapaththu went down with an injury in the sixth over itself.
On the third ball of the over, Chamari Athapaththu swept away a delivery for a single. After that, she fell flat on the floor and looked in immense pain. Also, the replay showed that she was hobbling while taking that single.
Physio instantly came in the middle and did some stretching, and as Athapaththu was writhing in pain, she was stretchered off the field. Later, SLC released a statement, saying that the batter was fine.
"Chamari Athapaththu is currently undergoing treatment for a cramp in her right leg that she experienced while batting during the ongoing game between Sri Lanka and England," the SLC said in an official media release.

Very confident about my bowling unit - Chamari Athapaththu
Earlier, Sri Lankan women won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. Chamari Athapaththu said that they have a lot of confidence in the bowling unit, which is quite experienced. She said:
"Want to bowl first. Very confident about my bowling unit. We have a good experienced bowling unit. Conditions good for spin as well. If we restrict them to 200-240, will be good. One change for us. We struggled with our batting in the middle overs. Have worked on it. Privilege for the whole team to play at home."
Meanwhile, England Women's skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt expressed confidence in her team to do well while batting first against Sri Lanka. She said:
"Was going to bat, pretty happy with that. I think it'll be good (the pitch). Third game on it so the idea was to bat first, and across the day hopefully it'll get slower and our spinners will come into the game. Same team. A brilliant allrounder for us and makes up the balance of the team nicely (Capsey). We've had a few recruits come in and help us out in the nets (preparing against left-armers). Definitely not taking anything lightly. They've got some brilliant matchwinners in their side and some great control with their spinners in the middle."
