Jasprit Bumrah, on Saturday (June 29), starred with the ball as India beat South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling finale to clinch the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

Batting first, India scored 176 for 7 in 20 overs. The Men in Blue were reeling at 34 for 3 at one stage before a brilliant fifty from Virat Kohli rescued the team. The former India skipper scored 76 runs with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes. Axar Patel also played a crucial knock of 47 runs. For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje picked up two wickets apiece.

In reply, South Africa were on 151 for after 16 overs, needing 26 runs from the last four overs. With Heinrich Klaasen batting on 52 and David Miller at the other end, the Proteas were looking destined to win the game comfortably.

However, India's bowlers pulled things back in style and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for their side. South Africa's innings just got derailed after Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen in the 17th over. In the end South Africa ended their innings on 169 for 8.

Jasprit Bumrah played a key role in the triumph. He gave India the first breakthrough by dismissing Reeza Hendricks with a stunning delivery in the second over. Later in the 18th over, the India pace spearhead came up with another brilliant delivery to castle Marco Jansen. After taking his first wicket with an outswinger, Bumrah dismissed Jansen with an unplayable inswinger.

Meanwhile, Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his brilliant display in the competition. He finished the competition as the third-highest wicket-taker. The right-arm pacer picked up 15 wickets in 8 games while maintaining an economy rate of 4.17.

"Usually I’m the one who tries to keep my emotions in check and get the job done but today I don’t have many words, I don’t usually cry after a game but the emotions are taking over. We were in trouble but we’re really over the moon to win from that stage," said Jasprit Bumrah at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"It just felt good, tried to keep myself in a bubble and tried not to think too far ahead. When the big day comes, you have to do it, throughout the tournament I felt very clear. I always think about one ball and one over at a time, don’t think too far ahead. Emotions can take over, it was taking over but you have to keep it in check but now that the game is over, it can come out and you can scream and shout," he added.
