The ongoing fifth Test between India and England at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala is Jonny Bairstow‘s 100th Test. The wicketkeeper-batsman became the 17th England player to play 100 Tests.

The right-handed batsman made his debut in Tests in 2012 at the iconic Lord’s and although he rarely enjoyed a long run in Tests at a stretch, he has bounced back in style after every setback. Known for his resilience, Jonny Bairstow has joined a handful of cricketers who have played 100 Tests.

On Thursday (March 7), he was joined by his family members in Dharamsala as he received a cap on the special occasion. His teammate and good friend Joe Root handed him the cap and delivered a moving speech. Jonny Bairstow was in tears as Root delivered the emotional speech.

“Jonathan Mark with a C Bairstow. Find myself stood here at the foot of the Himalayas. You’ve already climbed a mountain to get here. I was 12 years old when I first met you coming through the Yorkshire Academy. And the talent you had then was there for everyone to see.

“With that being said to get to 100 Test matches, it’s not a straight road. You’re gonna have to come over some roadblocks along the way. And one of your best strengths as a character and as a player is to be able to face challenges and adversity show huge amounts of tenacity,” Root said.

“I know how much you care to play for England and how much this cap, this badge, this shirt means to you. It’s another big part of who you are as a player. Within your 100 games, you’ve broken and set so many different records with both gloves and with the bat.

“You’ve played some of the most exciting and exhilarating innings in a Test shirt, and you’ve been at the forefront of some of England’s greatest-ever test wins,” he further added.

Joe Root’s hilarious suggestion for Jonny Bairstow:

Joe Root also talked about Jonny Bairstow’s family and said that his late father, David Bairstow would be proud of him. With Bairstow struggling to contain his emotions, Root hilariously ended his speech. The former England captain asked Bairstow to stay in his crease, reminding him of his infamous run-out against Australia in last year’s Ashes.

“You try and relax. You try and enjoy it, and you be genuine and authentic to who you are as a player. Let’s stick your chest out look them in the eye, but stay in your crease, all right?” Root said leaving Bairstow and others in splits.

Talking about the fifth Test, England were bowled out for just 218 runs. Both Root (26) and Bairstow (29) got the starts but failed to convert them into big scores.
