Sri Lanka National Cricket Team player Kamindu Mendis showcased a terrific fielding effort in the second ODI and grabbed an absolute screamer to end the stay of India National Cricket Team vice-captain Shubman Gill.
Charith Asalanka's Sri Lanka National Cricket Team hosted Rohit Sharma's India National Cricket Team in the second ODI of the three-match series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The Lankan Team, under the leadership of Charith Asalanka, for the first time in the ongoing India tour of Sri Lanka 2024, entered a match with confidence as they tied the series-opening clash from a losing position.
Sri Lanka displayed a quality performance in the first match, with players like Pathum Nissanka and Dunith Wellalage stepping up with the bat and smashing crucial half-centuries to take their side to a good total. The hosts posted 230/8 on the board after being in a miserable position at one point.
The performance with the ball was something that the hosts cherished the most, as after a poor start, they bounced back strong and pulled off a tie from the jaws of defeat. They kept picking wickets at crucial junctures and bundled out the power-packed Indian batting line-up to 230 runs in 47.5 overs to make sure that the match was tied.
Shifting focus to the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. After losing a wicket on the first ball, Sri Lanka made a stunning comeback and scored 240 runs at the loss of 9 wickets. It was overall a good performance from the Lankan Lions as they batted as a unit and posted a great total on the board.
Watch: Shubman Gill Falls For 35 As Kamindu Mendis Grabs A Stunner
Shubman Gill, as usual, played with a conservative approach, unlike his batting partner Rohit Sharma, and took his time to settle in the middle. He got a good start and just needed to convert it into a big score, which he once again failed to do and received heavy criticism.
Shubman Gill, who in recent times hasn't managed to score big, was dismissed in the 18th over and he had to take a long walk back to the pavilion. Gill was dismissed after scoring 35 runs off 44 balls and his innings consisted of 3 boundaries.
The credit for Shubman Gill's wicket goes to Kamindu Mendis, who grabbed a stunning catch in the slips to remove the Indian batter. On the first ball of the 18th over, Vandersay bowled a flighted delivery spinning away outside off stump and Shubman Gill played the drive and got a thick outside edge. The ball flew towards to the right of slip where Kamindu Mendis took an absolutely great one-handed catch.
