Rohit Sharma, on Monday (June 24), missed out on a well-deserved century against Australia in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 clash as he was clean bowled by Mitchell Starc.

India needed their captain to lead them from the very front in the crucial game after Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. With Virat Kohli departing for a duck in the very second over, the onus was on Rohit Sharma to make sure that the team recovered and the captain did not disappoint.

Soon after Kohli's departure, Rohit Sharma fired on all cylinders to put India on the front foot. He set the tone for the rest of the inning in the very third over by smashing Mitchell Starc for four sixes and a four. By the time the powerplay came to an end, India had raced away to 60 runs with Rohit Sharma scoring 51 of those from just 21 balls.

Rohit continued to play the big shots for fun even after the fielding restrictions ended. At the end of the 10th over, India were on 114 for 2 with Rohit batting on 89 from only 37 balls. The India star was looking destined to score a well-deserved century. However, his hopes were dashed by Mitchell Starc in the 12th over.

The Australia pace spearhead clean-bowled Rohit Sharma to deny him his first-ever T20 World Cup century. On the second ball of the over, Starc fired one in the blockhole and Rohit went for a big shot. However, the India opener could not make any contact with the ball and the ball went on to crash into the stumps.

Rohit departed after playing a brilliant knock of 92 runs. His knock came off just 41 balls and was studded with 7 fours and 8 sixes. He also became only the second Indian player to touch the 90-run mark in an innings in the T20 World Cup. The first batter to do it was former player Suresh Raina.
