Ravichandran Ashwin was drafted into India’s playing XI by dropping the in-form Washington Sundar and overlooking Ravindra Jadeja for the ongoing second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
However, much to one and all’s disappointment, Ravichandran Ashwin couldn’t contribute much with the bat, as the Indian off-spinner was dismissed by Mitchell Stars for 22 runs off 22 balls in the ongoing Day-Night Test in the second session at the Adelaide Oval.

On the second ball of the 39th over, Mitchell Starc dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin with a stunning delivery. The ball, bowled at 139.5 kph, was an inswinging yorker on middle stump. Ashwin was late in bringing his bat down, and the ball swung in sharply, striking him in front of the stumps, as the ball crashed into the middle-stump.

Ashwin reviewed the decision, but the ball-tracking confirmed that the ball was on course to hit the middle stump, and India lost the review. It was the fourth wicket for Mitchell Starc and seventh blow to India in the ongoing second Test in Adelaide.

Well, in the same over, the Australian pacer removed Harshit Rana for a three-ball duck with an inswinging yorker, which was too good for the young Indian pacer to beat the pace at the Adelaide Oval. The seasoned pacer has been continuously troubling Indian batters with his fiery bouncers.
Mitchell Starc achieves rare milestones with five-wicket haul in Day-Night Test
Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc etched his name in history with a stunning performance in the ongoing Day-Night Test against India. With a fiery spell that left the Indian batting line-up in pieces, Starc claimed figures of 5/39, marking his first-ever five-wicket haul against India in Test cricket.
It was Mitchell Starc’s fourth five-wicket haul in the Day-Night Tests, which is the highest, while only two others could take five-wicket hauls twice with the pink ball. Notably, Australia has a 100% winning record in the Day-Night Test in Adelaide, and they would love to continue against India as well.

On the other hand, Indian batters yet again struggled to counter the pink-ball challenges, with the Australian team making a strong comeback in the Day-Night Test after suffering a crushing defeat in the ongoing five-match Test series opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth last month.
India had made three changes to the Perth Test squad, dropping Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, and Devdutt Padikkal for Ravichandran Ashwin, Shubman Gill, and captain Rohit Sharma, respectively.
I still see them playing a significant role in the rest of the Test series: Rohit Sharma on Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja
Ahead of the ongoing Adelaide Test, the Indian skipper emphasized the importance of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, as they were not given a chance in the Perth Test. He explained that their exclusion from the first Test in Perth was a strategic move tailored to the conditions and their overall plan.
Rohit Sharma had said at the pre-match press conference, “Unfortunately, I wasn't there to break the news to them that they wouldn't be playing the first game. It's always difficult to leave out experienced players like them, but the decision was made for the team's benefit. I still see them playing a significant role in the rest of the series because their quality is unquestionable.”
