Indian cricketers Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer opened up about the most talked about side of their captain Rohit Sharma, who is known for his funny banter on the field, during the CEAT Cricket Awards 2024 on Wednesday, August 21.

Rohit is known as a very supportive captain who gives a lot of freedom to his players during India’s matches.

Even when needed, the Indian cricket team captain offers useful feedback to his players, and when a player fails to execute things, Rohit communicates his message effectively through subtle yet impactful responses, without even needing to say a word.

Now reacting to this viral yet amusing side of Rohit, Shami said that the skipper gives his players freedom, and it is one of his best qualities. However, when expectations aren't met, Rohit’s reactions become more noticeable.

The star pacer said that Rohit would guide you on what should have been done, what was needed, or the direction you should take.

But if a player continues to fall short, those reactions—often visible on the screen—begin to tell the story and the message becomes clear even without Rohit having to say a word, according to Shami.

In the viral video, Mohammed Shami said, “First of all, Rohit bhai gives you freedom. This is the best thing about him, and if you don’t meet his expectations, his reactions start to show a bit. He’ll tell you that you should have done this or what was needed to do that, or you have to do this; we are going on this line.

"But if you still don’t get it right and live up to it, then the reactions we see on the screen are coming. The words we understand without him saying anything start to come out.”

Meanwhile, in the same video, Iyer agreed with Shami, pointing out that the Indian players often fill in the gaps with words while visualizing who or what Rohit Sharma might be referring to at a particular moment.

The star batter said that having played alongside Rohit for so many years, the players have developed an understanding of his feelings, even when he doesn't fully express them.

Shreyas Iyer noted: “Shami bhai is actually right. We fill in the words: Wo, To, Usko, Isko. So, all this is filled in the blanks. So, we just visualize who will be there in this moment, who is there about him. But we understand his feelings, as we have been playing with him for so many years.”

Responding to the comments from Iyer and Shami, Rohit explained in the video that he encourages his teammates to be themselves on the field, so he must also remain true to himself in order to lead by example.

The skipper said that this authenticity is something he values deeply. Reacting to Iyer and Shami’s remark, Rohit said: “I keep asking them to be themselves on the field, right? For that, first I have to be myself. And that's all I have.”
