With a 77-run partnership between Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah in the first session on Day 5 at Lord’s, India have batted England out of the game as the lead has swelled to 259. This is now the highest ninth-wicket partnership for India in England.
With the bad light, a strong Indian bowling attack, a fragile top 3, there is little chance that the hosts will even think of going after the run chase, let alone do it at all.
Mohammed Shami, coming in at number 9 at the score of 194-7, notched up his second Test fifty with a 92 metres six off Moeen Ali over mid-wicket. He skipped down the track, as Ali gave flight to the ball enticing the batsman for a slog, and he did. However, Mohammed Shami smacked it clean as a whistle and comfortably cleared the cow corner boundary to bring up the landmark.

This was just after the ball he had whacked Ali for a boundary with a similar shot. However, it hasn’t been all slog in Mohammed Shami’s innings. He, in fact, displayed great mental restraint to not wildly slog Ali till that time considering his attacking instincts.
The Bengal pacer found it difficult going at the start as England bowlers hurled bouncers at him and Bumrah; one pacy Mark Wood delivery even hit him on the shoulder. With all attention of the bowlers on Bumrah, Shami smartly maneuvered the strike for single and double for a while.
Then, in the 99th over of the innings, bowled by Ali, Mohammed Shami broke the shackles. He spanked Ali for three fours and a six before Lunch, as well as one gorgeous boundary off James Anderson. He drove the pacers beautifully on a couple of occasions – on which even Virat Kohli would be proud of – he cut, he half-pulled as well. before slogging his way to a fifty with a gigantic six.
