The ball was pitched and nipped away just enough to take a thick edge off Smith's bat. It flew at shoulder height toward the second slip, where Rahul was stationed. The Indian batter moved to his right and went for it with both hands, but the ball struck his fingertips and popped out.
The dropped catch not only gave Smith a lifeline but also gave frustration to the Indian camp. Mohammed Siraj was stunned and disappointed by the missed opportunity.

The on-field umpire tried the usual method, checking the ball with the ring gauge, and it failed to pass through. Meanwhile, things got even more heated. The Indian captain, Shubman Gill, was seen in an animated conversation with the umpire, as he was not happy with the new ball provided.

Even during the drinks break on Day 2 at Lord’s, Shubman Gill was seen having a heated conversation with the umpires. He looked clearly frustrated as he held up the ball, trying to make his point. Gill was animated in his gestures, pointing at the ball and explaining something with urgency.
But the umpires didn’t seem convinced and brushed off his concerns, which only made him look more annoyed. It was clear that Gill wasn’t happy with the ball condition, and the way his arguments were dismissed by the umpires didn’t sit well with him.
Ben Stokes sparks debate over faulty ball checks
Since the start of the ongoing Test series, players from both teams are not happy with the balls, and even before the start of the Lord’s Test, Ben Stokes said that the rings being used by the umpires weren’t even meant for Dukes balls.
The England captain had said, “I don’t even think the rings that we use are Dukes rings; it isn’t ideal. It seemed like a big issue last week at Edgbaston. Whenever we have touring teams visiting, there is an issue with the balls going soft and completely out of shape. But you have to deal with it.”
