Watch: Mohammed Siraj Traps Joe Root Plumb In Front Of Wicket

England suffered a body blow in the morning session of the first day when they lost their skipper Joe Root immediately after the drink break.

It all happened on the first ball of the 12th over when Mohammed Siraj to nip back off the length after a series of outswingers he had bowled in his previous over. It was a perfect set-up by Siraj and he rightfully reaped the reward when he got one to jag off the surface t pin the English captain right in front of wicket.

Joe Root ended up playing outside the line of the delivery and missed it altogether. The ball struck Root on his back pad and Siraj and the entire Indian team went up in unison.

The on-field had no hesitation whatsoever in adjudging Joe Root leg-before wicket. It was so plumb that the only thing that could have saved Joe Root was if he had got an edge off his bat.

It clearly wasn’t the case as the English skipper, after a brief discussion with Jonny Bairstow, decided against going upstairs for the review and started his journey towards the dressing room.

This was Joe Root’s 5th consecutive sub-50 total since his double-hundred against India in the first innings of the series at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. His totals post that read: 40,6,33,17,19 and 5.

At the fall of Joe Root’s wicket, England were reeling at 3/30 but the duo of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes’ positive batting against both pace and spin ensured that the visitors survived the phase and went into the Lunch break at 3/74 in 25 overs.
