A bizarre moment unfolded during the second day's play of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final between Australia and South Africa on Thursday, June 12. Kyle Verreynne and Pat Cummins collided mid-pitch, and the South African batter was given out after a review, adding to the drama.

Pat Cummins delivered a stunning bowling performance at Lord’s, helping Australia get a 74-run first-innings lead. The Australian skipper took 6 wickets for 26 runs, including his spell after lunch. Cummins dismantled South Africa’s middle order almost single-handedly by claiming four quick wickets.

Both players ended up on the ground after the crash. The umpire initially ruled the batter not out. However, Cummins quickly recovered and successfully called for a review just before the DRS timer ran out.

The review showed the ball was hitting the leg stump, overturning the decision and giving Cummins a crucial wicket. The dismissal swung the momentum back to Australia after South Africa had dominated the first session.

Pat Cummins Becomes Fourth Captain to Claim Five-Wicket Haul at Lord’s

In the same over after dismissing Kyle Verreynne, Pat Cummins sent Marco Jansen back for a duck with a caught-and-bowled.

Cummins struck again shortly after, removing David Bedingham for 45 with a faint edge. It was his fifth wicket of the innings, making him just the fourth captain to claim a five-wicket haul at Lord’s.

He then wrapped up the South African innings by removing Kagiso Rabada, who had earlier taken a five-wicket haul himself. That final wicket also marked Cummins' 300th in Test cricket. Australia took firm control of the match.

Australia Take Upper Hand Heading Into Day 3 of WTC Final

South Africa resumed Day 2 at 43/4 and managed to reach 121/5 by lunch, appearing to steady the innings. However, their final five wickets collapsed for just 17 runs, handing Australia a significant first-innings lead of 74.

In reply, South Africa fought back with the ball during Australia’s second innings. Lungi Ngidi struck key blows by removing Steve Smith, Beau Webster, and skipper Pat Cummins. At one point, Australia were struggling at 73/7.

But a crucial 61-run stand between Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc helped Australia recover. By stumps, the visitors were 144/8, with Starc and Nathan Lyon at the crease and a lead stretched to 218, giving Australia the upper hand heading into Day 3.
