India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin finally came to the party in the ongoing English county championship group two match playing for Surrey against Somerset at the Kennington Oval, London. Ashwin, who had taken just one wicket in the first innings and made a duck, bagged a five-wicket haul in the second do.
Ravichandran Ashwin decided to play for Surrey in this only match for him in the English County championship 2021, after replacing the injured Kyle Jamieson. This would rather be a good match practice and warm-up for Ashwin ahead of India’s Test Match series against England.
In the first innings, Ashwin managed just 1/99 in more than 40 overs and made zero runs, falling to Jack Leach on the first ball he faced. Surrey managed just 240 in their first innings in reply to Surrey’s 429.
Ravichandran Ashwin Bags 6/27, Takes Five Wickets In 13 Overs To Help Surrey Bundle Somerset For 69
Taking advantage of a slowing and turning pitch, Surrey captain Rory Burns decided to give the new ball again to Ravichandran Ashwin and this time he made use of the vast experience he possesses under his sleeves and created problems for the Somerset’s batters in the second innings.
He ran through the Somerset batsmen picking 5 wickets in 13 overs and ending up with figures of 6/27 in 15 overs with 4 maidens. Actually, the pitch was assisting the slow bowlers so much that Burns employed three spinners throughout the Somerset innings with Dan Moriarty picking the remaining 4 wickets for 20 runs.
Opening the bowling for the second time in the match Ashwin dismissed Somerset’s batters in quick succession. Steven Davies (7), Tom Lammonby (3), James Hildreth (14), George Bartlett (12), and Roelof van der Merwe (7), and Ben Green (3) fell prey to India’s premium spinner. Somerset who came into their second innings with a lead of 189 runs, could muster just 69 more runs.
Surrey needs 259 runs to win the match and pocket some important points.
It was a good outing for Ashwin, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2019-2021 cycle of the World Test Championship with 71 scalps under his name. Heading into the five-Test series against England, it is a no-brainer that he would be an important asset to the team.
