Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, on Thursday (September 19), once again bailed India out of trouble with their batting. The spin stars showed their batting skills once again to rescue India from a precarious situation in the ongoing first India vs Bangladesh Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Asked to bat first, India were off to a terrible start as they lost three big wickets in the first session. Right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud picked up all three wickets. He first dismissed India captain Rohit Sharma (6) before sending back Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6) too to leave India reeling at 34 for 4.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant then steadied the ship with a 62-run stand. However, they could not form a big partnership as Mahmud struck again after the lunch break to break the stand. He dismissed Pant for 39 runs to reduce India to 96 for 4.
It was followed by another promising stand between Jaiswal and KL Rahul before the two departed in quick succession. Jaiswal was out for 56 while Rahul was dismissed for 16 as India found themselves 6 down for just 144 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin impresses Ravindra Jadeja:
India were firmly on the backfoot when Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin joined hands in the middle. With the team reeling at 144 for 6, the onus was on the senior players to deliver with the bat and they did not disappoint. In the last one decade or so, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja have rescued India on a number of occasions with the bat and they were at it again on day one of the IND vs BAN Test.
Both the players showed remarkable composure and mixed caution with aggression to help India recover. At the time of writing this report, India were on 285 for 6. The partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja was worth 141 runs. Ashwin was batting on 80 while Jadeja was unbeaten on 56.
During the partnership, Ashwin also managed to impress Jadeja with an audacious shot. It was the 62nd over of India's innings when Nahid Rana was bowling to Ashwin. On the second ball of the over, Rana bowled a short delivery that was well-directed towards Ashwin.
The senior spinner then made the most of the bounce and pace as he arched his back a bit and played a brilliant upper-cut shot to hit a four. Jadeja's reaction after the shot made it pretty clear that he was very impressed with his partner's shot.
