Rishabh Pant's explosive innings came to a dramatic end as he was trapped LBW by the spinner Ish Sodhi on Day 2 of the ongoing third and final Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the morning session.

The left-handed batter misjudged Ish Sodhi’s magical, sharp leg break that spun back in and caught him deep in the crease. The on-field umpire Michael Gough raised the finger, signaling the end of Rishabh Pant’s stay, but the Indian wicketkeeper-batter was sure, and he opted for a review.

The drama unfolds at Wankhede as Rishabh Pant’s fiery innings end in controversial LBW call

He went for a review after a brief chat with his batting partner, Shubman Gill. Fans held their breath, hoping for a twist, but ball-tracking confirmed the umpire’s call, showing the ball clipping a leg stump, and it was enough to decide Rishabh Pant’s fate in the ongoing Test match.

The crowd’s cheers turned into silence as the original decision stood, and Pant was indeed given LBW out. Frustration was clear as Pant left the crease visibly upset, tossing his bat in disappointment and exchanging sharp words with umpire Gough as he walked off.

Sodhi’s perfectly timed delivery had outwitted Pant, who played a brilliant knock of 60 runs off 59 balls studded with eight boundaries and two sixes against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium. His dismissal broke a significant partnership of 96 runs off 114 balls with Shubman Gill.

Meanwhile, India fought back on the second morning of the ongoing third and final Test after a late collapse on Day 1 threatened to derail their innings against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, where intense heat and humidity tested the players apart from the game play.

Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill stepped up with gritty half-centuries, bringing stability and momentum into India’s innings against the Kiwis, who have already won the ongoing Test series by winning the first two Tests for the first time on Indian soil.

Gill survived a close call when he was on 45, narrowly avoiding a dismissal as Mark Chapman fumbled an easy catch. Not just Gill, Pant was also lucky when Matt Henry dropped a chance at long-off, allowing him to continue his aggressive play in the ongoing Mumbai Test.

Currently, India is trailing by just 40 runs before the lunch break, with the Indian cricket team appearing more confident after a steady recovery against New Zealand. However, the tourists may be ruining missed opportunities that allowed India to recover strongly at the Wankhede Stadium.

Gill will resume the batting at 70* while Ravindra Jadeja will join him at 10* as they will be aiming to help India take a significant lead against the Kiwi side in the ongoing third and final Test match. India kept Sarfaraz Khan safe for the later hours of Day 2, as Wankhede is his home ground and he can grind as much as he can in the ongoing game.
