Watch: Rohit Sharma forced to join Mumbai Ranji team due to poor form

India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma, who is under a massive pump, will be in the nets along with the Mumbai Ranji Team. As per the reports in Times of India, the captain will be training with the state team ahead of the second round of Ranji Trophy 2024-25.

Mumbai will be playing their first game of the second round of Ranji Trophy 2024-25 against Jammu and Kashmir. The match between the teams is all set to take place from 23rd January at the Mumbai Cricket Association's BKC ground.

Rohit reportedly has informed the team that he will be training with them and are chances that he might play the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Jammu and Kashmir. The reports claimed that the BCCI has informally advised all the Indian players to play in the domestic circuit when there aren't any international commitments.

A source close to the Times of India claimed that Rohit Sharma, along with Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur and Ajinkya Rahane, will be there at the practice session on Tuesday (14th January). He also confirmed that the skipper is keen to play the Ranji Trophy match against J&K.

He said: "Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas lyer (who was recently named as the Punjab Kings captain) and Shardul Thakur will train with the Mumbai team at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, and then at the BKC on Wednesday and Thursday. Rohit has told the MCA that he will come for practice. At the moment, there are all indications that he's keen to play the match versus J&K,"

The move to play in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 comes after Rohit Sharma had a poor outing with the bat in the last few Tests that he played. The India National Cricket Team skipper failed in the entire home Test season and struggled to score in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as well.

Owing to his poor form, Rohit then took the tough decision and dropped himself for the last game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. In the three games that he played in the series, he scored just 31 runs at an average of just 6. Overall in the last 8 games, he amassed 164 runs at a tick over 10.

Rohit Sharma's place in the team as a captain as well as the batter has come under massive scanner. However, with him now deciding to play in the Ranji Trophy match, it will be a great opportunity for him to regain his form and get some confidence under his belt.

Rohit is all set to lead India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. There have been reports that claimed that after the tournament, BCCI will be looking at his successor and will be naming a new skipper in Tests and ODIs.
