The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team suffered a rare defeat against New Zealand on Sunday, October 20, as the tourists won the first Test by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

After India’s first Test defeat against New Zealand on home soil since 1988, the dressing room was not cool at all. After New Zealand scripted the history at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and batting coach Abhishek Nayar were seen having tense discussions in the dressing room.

New Zealand breaks 36-year drought with historic win over India

It was an embarrassment for India, as New Zealand secured their first Test victory on Indian soil in 36 years. It is New Zealand’s only third triumph in 37 Test matches played in India. Additionally, this is the first time since 2000 that a visiting team has successfully chased down a target of over 100 runs in the fourth inning in India.

Notably, Team India made a remarkable turnaround from being bowled out for a humiliating 46 to posting a towering 462 in their second innings against New Zealand, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. It was a display of sheer resilience, determination, spirit, and skill from India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The first inning saw five top-order batters fall to ducks, but then they bounced back strongly against New Zealand. Sarfaraz Khan’s majestic 150 and Rishabh Pant’s gritty 99 highlighted the fearless comeback made by the Indian cricket team, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli smoked the fifties to take the hosts to 462 in the second innings in the Bengaluru Test.

Later, defending the paltry target of 107 runs, Indian bowlers fought tooth and nail, pushing the New Zealand cricket team to their limits. Despite the valiant effort, their first innings performance haunted them, ultimately proving to be the decisive factor in their defeat in the three-match Test series opener in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, a video is currently going viral on social media, where captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir can be seen having a heated conversation. Since it is unknown what they were discussing, Gautam Gambhir and Rohit’s body language and facial expressions made clear that they were arguing about some decisions that cost them the game.

Abhishek Nayar also joined them in the discussion. Now, the video of their discussion is going crazily viral across social media platforms, with many speculating that they were talking about the toss call that played a key role in the team's defeat.

After the match, Rohit Sharma admitted that New Zealand bowled really well and challenged every Indian batter, and they failed to respond to that. Rohit also hailed the Indian batters’ efforts in the second inning.

We will try and put our best game forward: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation: “We will take the positives and move forward. There are guys who have been in this situation before. Two Test matches to go, and we know exactly what is needed from each one of us. We will try and put our best game forward.”
