After the collapse, New South Wales (NSW) released a statement regarding the details of the collapse. The statement further claimed that inspections had taken place before the match and further inspections are taking place due to the recent incident.
“During tonight’s severe winds and storm, a piece of vinyl soffit sheeting from the O’Reilly Stand became loose and was identified by venue staff,” NSW stated as per The Indian Express.
“Venue staff immediately vacated patrons from the area to ensure their safety. After the area was cleared, the piece of vinyl soffit sheeting became detached. Two seating bays have been cleared and patrons have been provided seating in another grandstand,” the statement further added.
Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder match was washed out due to rain
The match was badly affected by rain and had to be called off with just 5.1 overs bowled. Sydney Sixers won the toss and elected to field first. The match was stopped after just 1.4 overs due to rain.
The match resumed after a delay of 15 minutes but was reduced to 19-overs-a-side. The match was stopped later after 5.1 overs were bowled and it could not be started again because of persistent rain and high-blowing winds in Sydney.
Sydney Thunder were 36-1 in 5.1 overs when the match was stopped and it had to be ended at that score with no result. At the time when the match was halted, Sydney Thunders skipper David Warner was batting on 22 off just 14 balls with 3 fours and 1 six already to his name.
Youngster Hugh Weibgen was batting alongside him. Sam Konstas, Australia's latest sensation in Test cricket, opened the batting with David Warner but was dismissed cheaply for just 9 off 14 deliveries. Konstas was removed by pacer Jack Edwards.
It is to be noted that two of Australia's star cricketers of the last decade David Warner and Steve Smith were up against each other in this match. As a result, it was one of the highly anticipated games of this season.
