Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder are currently up against each other in the 14th match of the ongoing Big Bash League 2024-25 (BBL 2024-25) at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. This encounter has witnessed a disappointing moment for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Thunder.

In the 13th over of Sydney Thunder’s innings at the Manuka Oval, Sam Billings, facing Melbourne Stars’ bowler Peter Siddle, played a shot just outside off stump and tapped it to short third. Billings took off for a single but was slow in getting his bat down.

Melbourne Stars fail to review run-out; Sam Billings makes the most of the chance in the BBL 2024-25 clash

There was a direct hit at the bowler's end that nearly resulted in a run-out. But the umpire did not refer the decision to the third umpire, as it wasn’t clear if there was an appeal from the Melbourne Stars.

The throw ricocheted off the stumps and went into a gap, allowing Sam Billings and Jason Sangha to steal an extra run against the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing BBL 2024-25 encounter.

Replay showed that Billings was short of the crease, but since no appeal was made, the umpires didn’t send the run-out review request to the third umpire.

This incident left the former Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell and current skipper Marcus Stoinis disappointed. In the viral video, Glenn Maxwell was seen upset after being told by the commentators that Billings was out.

Glenn Maxwell's reaction to the missed chance goes viral:

But the missed opportunity cost the Stars dearly, as Sam Billings went on to play a thundering knock of 72 runs off 39 balls laced with nine boundaries and two sixes for the Thunders.

Billings also added 60 runs off 44 balls with Jason Sangha (33) and 33 runs with Rutherford to help Sydney Thunder post a challenging 182/8 on the board in their 20 overs against the Melbourne Stars.

Peter Siddle eventually got rid of Sam Billings but damage was already done

Interestingly, it was Peter Siddle who eventually dismissed Sam Billings. Siddle delivered a slower ball, back of a length and wide outside off, tempting Billings to go for a big shot. However, the Englishman got a thick under-edge, and the ball crashed into the stumps.

Billings and Sangha were the top scorers for the Sydney Thunder, with the captain, David Warner, scoring only 19 runs against the Stars. Beau Webster was the standout bowler for the Stars with a three-wicket haul, while Osama Mir and Siddle each snared two wickets against the Thunders.

Chasing the target, Melbourne Stars had a poor start as their opener Sam Harper lost his wicket cheaply for 4 runs in the first over, followed by captain Marcus Stoinis (22) and Glenn Maxwell (6). However, Ben Duckett (48*) still kept their hopes alive along with Hilton Cartwright (12*).
