Sanju Samson Faces Tough Fight for Opening Slot in Asia Cup 2025
There is stiff competition for the opening slot in India's squad ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to begin on September 9. Sanju Samson's consistent performances pushed his case in the playing XI.
Shubman Gill, named vice-captain for the tournament, is likely to open. Samson had featured as an opener in recent T20Is because Gill was unavailable due to commitments in other formats.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar hinted that Gill’s position at the top is likely fixed, leaving Samson to compete with other players for a place in the XI. Abhishek Sharma could also be chosen over Samson, given his ability to bowl part-time spin, providing the team with added flexibility.
Suryakumar Yadav-led Team India to Kick Off Asia Cup 2025 Campaign on September 10
Samson has an impressive record in the last T20I season. Last year, he scored 436 runs in 12 innings at an average of 43.60 and a strike rate of 180.16, including three centuries and a fifty. However, he amassed just 51 runs in 5 innings this year at an average of 10.20 and a strike rate of 118.60.
The Kerala-born cricketer might be required to adjust to a middle-order role to secure a spot in the playing XI. However, he has struggled to score at number four or below in the shortest international format.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led team will begin their Asia Cup campaign on September 10. They will play their first match against the UAE in Dubai. The remaining group stage matches against Pakistan and Oman will take place on September 14 and September 19, respectively.
