Shaheen Afridi was part of the Pakistan team that recently played in the T20 World Cup. The team faced a league stage exit after facing defeats to India and USA.

The USA beating Pakistan was one of the major upsets of this tournament. The 2009 T20 World Cup champions have had two very average ICC events in recent times. They did not qualify for the semis of the ODI World Cup and did not make it even to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup.

Shaheen Afridi, after returning back to Pakistan post-World Cup addressed the local media and responded to queries on Mohsin Naqvi's statement on the team requiring a "major surgery" post their World Cup exit.

Naqvi had stated that the team needed "major surgery," a remark that Shaheen found amusing. Addressing reporters on Monday, Shaheen quipped, "Koi Beemar Hogaya (Whose surgery, Is somebody ill?)", sparking laughter among those present.

Shaheen Afridi Trolls PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi

“I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery. It is very disappointing the way we lost to the USA and now this loss to India. We need to now start looking at players beyond those in the team right now" the PCB chief said in June while the World Cup was on.

“Why the team is not performing is something everyone is asking. The World Cup is still on. But obviously, we will sit down and take a look at everything" he further added.

Pakistan was led in this T20 World Cup by Babar Azam. The newly appointed PCB Chief named Babar as the new captain of Pakistan across formats as the captaincy was snatched from Shaheen. Pakistan lost to New Zealand away from home under Shaheen's captaincy. Shaheen had captained the team in one series, where they lost 4-1 to New Zealand, before being removed from the role. This made the PCB Chairman go back to Babar to regain the captaincy.

However, things did not work out as under Babar Azam, Pakistan did not have a good T20 World Cup. They lost to England heading into the World Cup and also lost a game to Ireland in a T20I bilateral series. After losses to the USA and India, a win against Ireland was not enough to take Pakistan ahead in the tournament.

The Pakistan cricket fraternity and former cricketers are still debating over PCB's decision to retain Babar Azam as captain. As per reports, there have been rifts between Babar and Shaheen since the captaincy switch. Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim who came out of retirement to play in the tournament did not have an impact either.
