The Pakistan National Cricket Team might have suffered the embarrassing defeat of 120 runs in the second and final Test against the West Indies, but the skipper, Shan Masood, was full-on high in Multan, as he was engaged in a fiery exchange with a journalist.

Actually, Pakistan hit a historic low in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) as they finished last in the points table for the first time ever. On January 27, the Shan Masood-led Pakistan Test team suffered a 120-run defeat to the West Indies to finish at the bottom of the WTC 2023-25 points table.

Shan Masood responds fiercely to journalist’s criticism of Pakistan's WTC performance

The Pakistani team ended the 2023-25 WTC cycle with a points percentage of 27.98, winning just 5 out of 14 Tests. Speaking about their past appearances, Pakistan ranked fifth in the inaugural WTC, and then in the next cycle, they slipped to seventh, and now they finished as the eighth team in the standings.

After the two-match Test series ended at 1-1 following West Indies' dominating win over Pakistan in the Multan Test, Shan Masood engaged in a heated argument with a journalist during the post-match press conference.

Notably, he was the same journalist who tried to roast Masood by questioning his role in the team as a captain during the England series and got the befitting response. However, this time also he was badly roasted by Shan.

A journalist questioned Masood about Pakistan's declining World Test Championship performance and also asked if he would take strong action independently or wait for the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) order, as the next Test assignment is eight months away.

This irked the Test captain and he furiously said, “Next question, please,” before cooking up the journalist. The frustrated Masood accused the journalist of being overly critical of the Pakistan National Cricket Team and lacking an understanding of how things are planned behind the scenes.

Shan Masood said at the post-match press conference: “See, the way you talked about the last two series, I can’t give any answer to that. If you want to talk about the facts, then do it. Your information is totally inaccurate. By announcing a team or not, things don’t change. In the second Test, we didn’t announce the team; we announced it after a couple of practice sessions and evaluating the conditions.”

A lot of disrespect in your questions: Shan Masood to Pakistani journalist

Masood has admitted that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) makes the final decisions, which he and all players always respect. He also expressed his frustration at feeling disrespected, urging the journalist to appreciate the team’s efforts, especially when they’re taking risks to improve. The seasoned batter also called for more understanding before passing judgment.

The Test captain signed off by saying, “It’s your opinion, and I respect it, but you should also respect your players. The decision maker is the Pakistan Cricket Board. The board takes the decision, and we have always respected it. We are a country, and we are your people. No one tolerates being insulted like this. There was a lot of disrespect in your questions.

If you want to show someone down, show them. We play for Pakistan, and our efforts are always to bring results. If we are trying something and putting in efforts, and we are ready to make compromises and take risks, you should appreciate this. So, until you know everything, you should not criticize anybody.”
