South African pacer Dale Steyn got emotional during a live show after Kolkata Knight Riders’ player Shivam Mavi called him his idol. Mavi’s words bought tears to Steyn’s eyes. The incident happened during ESPNCricinfo’s show ‘T20 Timeout’. Dale Steyn and Aakash Chopra were the two experts who appeared on the show.
During the live show, Aakash Chopra and Steyn were discussing the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Punjab Kings match of IPL 2021, in which the former won by 5 wickets. Later, the host showed a video clip of KKR player Shivam Mavi, where he talked about Dale Steyn. His words made Steyn emotional and bought tears to his eyes.
Shivam Mavi Calls Dale Steyn His Idol
Mavi revealed that he always followed Steyn’s bowling closely. When Mavi called the South African pacer his idol, it made Dale Steyn emotional during the live show.
“Ever since I began playing the sport, I used to follow Dale Steyn very closely. When I started bowling, I used to be able to bowl outswingers and I used to follow Dale Steyn while trying to learn how to bowl. I follow the tactics of some other bowlers too, such as Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar, but my idol has always been Dale Steyn,” said Shivam Mavi during the show.

Reacting to Shivam Mavi’s words, Steyn said that he never expected to make an impact on people that live at opposite ends of the world.
“It’s pretty amazing. Almost like he brings a tear to my eyes to be honest with you, I am not going to lie. I never expected to play this game and have an impact on people that live at opposite ends of the world. I still play, which is still great, I still love playing”, he said.
Steyn has been one of the greatest pacers to play cricket for South Africa. At the peak of his career, Steyn was the top-ranked Test bowler in ICC rankings. The right-arm pacer Steyn played 93 Tests for South Africa and scalped 439 wickets. In 125 ODIs, he picked 196 wickets.
In 47 T20Is, Steyn bagged 64 wickets. Steyn has also played for teams like Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Lions, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in India Premier League.
