Star Indian batter Virat Kohli made his return to domestic cricket during the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match between Delhi and Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, an unexpected turn took place on Day 3 (Saturday, February 1), as three fans invaded the field, attempting to meet the Indian cricket star.

This wasn't the first security breach during the ongoing first-class match in Delhi. On the opening day, January 30, a fan rushed onto the field to meet Virat Kohli while he was fielding in the slips. The fan touched Kohli's feet before security personnel quickly intervened and escorted him off the field.

Virat Kohli's Return to the Ranji Trophy in the 2024-25 Season Was Disappointing

Kohli's return to the Ranji Trophy in the 2024-25 season was disappointing as he was dismissed for just 6 runs in Delhi's first innings. Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan, who took Kohli's wicket, described it as a "dream come true" and a "special moment."

Kohli was bowled out by Sangwan, who delivered a perfect ball that went through the gap between bat and pad, sending the off stump flying. Despite Kohli's departure, Delhi ended Day 2 at 334-7, with skipper Ayush Badoni contributing 99 off 77 balls and Sumit Mathur remaining unbeaten on 78 off 189 balls.

Kohli has been facing a challenging phase in red-ball cricket. Once, he was averaging over 50 in Test cricket, but his average now stands at 46.85 with 9,230 runs. In 2024, Kohli played 10 Test matches, where he scored just 417 runs in 19 innings at an average of 24.52, including one century and one half-century.

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali discussed Virat Kohli's immense fan following during the Ranji Trophy in a video on his YouTube channel. Basit stated that very few players have such a loyal fanbase, adding that his following extends beyond India, even trending in Pakistan.

"I have seen very few players in my life, maybe just 2-3, who had such fan-following. Aaj to Pakistan mein bhi trend bana hua tha. Sab likh rahe, 'Dekho izzat isko bolte hain' (Even people in Pakistan were writing, 'see, this is called respect)," Basit said.

"He was enjoying himself with his old friends and the public. The fans were just waiting for him to respond and chanting 'Kohli, Kohli' for his seven hours straight," he further added.
