After a turbulent few days that saw him getting dropped from the Test team as well as losing his central contract, Shreyas Iyer finally had something to smile about on Thursday (March 14) when Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy.

Mumbai thrashed Vidarbha by 169 runs to win India’s premier first-class competition for a record-extending 42nd time. Chasing an improbable total of 538 runs, Vidarbha came up with a fighting effort but were eventually bowled out for 368 runs. Captain Akshay Wadkar scored a century while Karun Nair and Harsh Dubey scored fifties but their efforts were not enough to propel Vidarbha to a third Ranji title.

Earlier in the game, Mumbai were bowled out for 224 runs in the first innings. In reply, Vidarbha could only manage 105 runs. In the second innings, Mumbai did well with the bat and posted 418 runs with Musheer Khan scoring a century and Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Shams Mulani scoring half-centuries.

As far as Shreyas Iyer is concerned, he was out for just seven runs in the first innings. However, he made amends by scoring 95 runs in the second innings. He and Musheer also shared a big stand of 168 runs for the fourth wicket.

Shreyas Iyer looked in an upbeat mood after the game and was seen dancing to celebrate Mumbai’s triumph. As the fans were busy playing ‘dhol in the stands, the Mumbai star was seen dancing to the tunes. He also waved at the fans, encouraging them to continue playing the ‘dhol’.

This is the second Ranji title for Shreyas Iyer. He won it for the first time in the 2015/16 season. On that occasion, the right-handed batsman had scored a century in the final. He was the only player who had scored a century in that game.

With the Ranji Trophy now done and dusted, Shreyas Iyer will be joining the Kolkata Knight Riders camp to prepare for IPL 2024, scheduled to be played from March 22. He missed the entire season last year due to a back injury and will be aiming for a good campaign. KKR will open their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23.
