India National Cricket Team Test captain Shubman Gill made a massive blunder to get run out in a shocking fashion during the fifth and final Test match on Thursday, July 31.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir looked extremely disappointed seeing Shubman Gill's mode of dismissal against the England National Cricket Team at the Kennington Oval in London.
Shubman Gill falls for 21 runs at The Oval
Gill lost his fifth consecutive toss as Test captain, and India were invited to bat first in the match. He was forced to walk into the middle in the 16th over itself after India lost both the openers - Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul - early on in the innings.
Shubman Gill once again looked superb at the crease on his arrival and was in total control. He played some gorgeous shots and looked set for yet another big score in the series.
Pretty soon, Gill crossed the 20-run mark, and many expected him to continue his streak of scoring a century every time he crossed 20 runs.
However, that streak came to an end in the fifth Test, and Gill only has himself to blame for his dismissal as he threw away his wicket, and the momentum shifted towards England.
On the second ball of the 28th over, pacer Gus Atkinson bowled a fullish delivery to Shubman Gill, who defended it towards the short cover region.
The ball was not far away from Gus Atkinson, who quickly charged at it in follow-through, but Gill had already taken off for an ill-judged run and was next to the English pacer when he picked up the ball.
Even though Sai Sudharsan was trying to stop his skipper from taking a single, he didn't listen, and when he turned back to return to his crease, it was too late as Gus Atkinson fired a good direct hit to shatter the stumps and went for a celebratory run after the wicket.
Shubman Gill got out for 21 runs off 35 balls, and his innings was studded with four boundaries.

Disaster for India - Ricky Ponting
Former England spinner Phil Tufnell, while speaking on BBC Test Match Special, was surprised to see Gill go for a single. He said:
"He set off like a jack rabbit. It's a great bit of fielding from Gus Atkinson and England get the prized scalp of Shubman Gill. It was like a greyhound out of the stalls. If it was hit, it was always out because he was miles out."
Meanwhile, the legendary Australia skipper Ricky Ponting stated that Gill made a big blunder because there was no run. Speaking on Sky Sports, Ricky Ponting said:
"Disaster for India – there was no run there at all – and great out cricket from Atkinson. He was alert and had all the time in the world to steady himself, get balanced and bang, picks out the middle stump! On a wicket like this, you don't want a run out."
