A masterstroke from India skipper Shubman Gill paid off for the team as Zak Crawley was dismissed for a duck in England’s second innings of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Mohammed Siraj had asked for a specific field placement, but Gill opted against it, and the decision proved to be spot on.
Shubman Gill scored 161 runs off 162 balls, including 13 fours and 8 sixes, on Day 4 (Saturday, July 5). KL Rahul (55), Rishabh Pant (65), and Ravindra Jadeja (69*) chipped in with valuable half-centuries to help India declare their second innings at 427/6. The visiting team set a target of 608 runs for England.
In response, the Indian bowlers bowled disciplined lines and lengths, with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj putting consistent pressure on the England batters.
Pichhle Mein Bhi Udhar Out Hua Hai, Maan Le - Shubman Gill
In a video shared by Star Sports on social media, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj were seen discussing field placements. Siraj urged for a different setup, as heard on the stump mic.
“Main udhar ki baat kar raha hu. Udhar bhi hai (I am talking about that position. One fielder is there as well)," Siraj was heard telling Gill on the stump mic.
However, Gill calmly listened before sharing his perspective. He predicted a catch on the offside, adding that this pitch behaved differently compared to the one in Leeds during the series opener. He advised Siraj to stick with a standard delivery.
“Udhar catch jaayega. Pichhle mein bhi udhar out hua hai, maan le. Ye waisa wicket nahi hai, Leeds wala wicket nahi hai. Normal daal (A catch would go there. He was dismissed there in the last innings as well. This wicket is not like the Leeds one)," Gill replied.

Shubman Gill’s Tactical Call Pays Off as Mohammed Siraj Removes Zak Crawley
After a brief discussion with Shubman Gill about field placements, Mohammed Siraj bowled a wide delivery that tempted Zak Crawley into a loose drive. The shot went straight to substitute fielder Sai Sudharsan at backward point. Crawley had been caught at slip in the first innings of the match.
Gill’s celebration, with a clear ‘told you so’ look, grabbed the attention of users on social media. The Ben Stokes-led team lost their first wicket at 11 for 1 in 1.4 overs.
England ended the day at 72 for 3, still needing 536 runs to chase down the target. Akash Deep removed Ben Duckett and Joe Root in the final session.
Shubman Gill Scripts History with Twin Centuries as India’s Test Captain
Shubman Gill made history by becoming only the third Indian captain to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. He shares this rare achievement with legends Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.
Gavaskar was the first to do it with scores of 107 and 182* against the West Indies in 1987, while Kohli smashed 115 and 141 against Australia in 2014.
Gill scored a double century in the first innings and a century in the second. He became just the second Indian after Gavaskar to achieve this in a single Test. Only nine players have reached this milestone.
