Nepal all-rounder Sompal Kami smashed a monstrous six off South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje during the 31st match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, Sompal Kami failed to guide the Nepal team to a memorable victory against South Africa in a low-scoring encounter in the marquee tournament.

Nepal suffered a heartbreaking one-run defeat in a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St. Vincent, on June 14. The Nepal team failed to chase down a 116-run target against South Africa. The Asian team missed out on the opportunity to record their first victory in the tournament.

Sompal Kami decided to take on Anrich Nortje when Nepal needed 16 runs from eight balls. Kami read Nortje's slower delivery perfectly and hit a massive 105-meter six in the 19th over during the run chase. This shot came after the right-handed batter played consecutive balls in the same over after reaching the crease.

Sompal Kami scored two runs off the last ball in the penultimate over, leaving the equation at eight runs off the last six balls. Gulshan Jha played two dot balls off Ottneil Baartman before scoring a boundary on the third ball. Gulshan smashed two runs on the fourth ball but failed to add a single run on the last two balls.

South Africa registered their fourth consecutive victory in Group D of the T20 World Cup. The Aiden Markram-led team advanced to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Nepal and Sri Lanka are eliminated from the tournament, while Bangladesh and the Netherlands compete for second place in Group D.

In Friday's match, South Africa scored 115 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 after being asked to bat first. Reeza Hendricks was the top scorer with 43 runs off 49 balls, featuring one six and five boundaries. Aiden Markram (15 off 22) and Quinton de Kock (10 off 11) couldn't convert their starts into big scores.

Tristan Stubbs scored an unbeaten 27 off 18 balls, including one six and two fours, to help the team surpass the 100-run mark. Kushal Bhurtel was the pick of the bowlers for Nepal, picking up four wickets for 19 runs in his four overs. Dipendra Singh secured three wickets for 21 runs, including one maiden over.

In response, Nepal reached 114 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Aasif Sheikh scored 42 runs off 49 balls, including six boundaries. Anil Sah contributed 27 runs off 24 balls with one six and three boundaries. Tabraiz Shamsi was the leading wicket-taker for South Africa, finishing with figures of 4/19.

Nepal will take on Bangladesh in their final group-stage match in Kingstown on Sunday, June 16. Meanwhile, South Africa will compete against co-hosts USA in a Super Eight match in Antigua on June 19.
