After a long period of time, the South Africa vs West Indies match saw an end to the match in an old-fashioned tie-breaker style. Dating back to the early days of T20 cricket, a rule called the bowl-out was used to decide the winner in games that ended in a tie.

Such an incident dates back to the first ICC T20 World Cup as well, where a match between India and Pakistan was decided with a bowl-out, with India being the first team in the history of the World Cup to win in a bowl-out.

Recently, the rain-interrupted match between South Africa and West Indies Legends marked a similar condition where the Proteas and West Indies engaged in a bowl-out session to seal the fate of the game.

South Africa vs West Indies Match Highlights

After rain had interrupted the game in England, it was decided to be held with 11 overs to be bowled between the sides. The West Indies were sent in to bat first, and Lendl Simmons remained the pick of the batters with 28 runs, while the West Indies could manage a score of 80 runs in their 11 overs.

Aaron Phangiso remained the best Protea bowler with 2 wickets in 3 overs bowled. In return, the South Africans could only score 80 runs and hence tied the game, falling just one run short of the target.

South African greats like AB de Villiers and West Indies legends like Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo were part of the participation. The drama remained intense with so many superstars taking the field again, and the fans witnessed a thriller.

Despite Sheldon Cottrell and Fidel Edwards' good spells, JP Duminy fired South Africa to level the scores and take the game into a tie-breaker after a quickfire 25 off 12 balls.

The match went on to the Bowl Out, the rules of which are very similar to a football match penalty. Every team gets to hit the wickets 5 times, and the team hitting the most times is declared the winner.

South Africa also did not start well, as their first three bowlers, Aaron Phangiso, Chris Morris, and Hardus Viljoen, all missed the wickets. However, JJ Smuts and Wayne Parnell both hit the target, and hence the Windies had to hit thrice to win and twice to draw the game again.

However, West Indies' four bowlers, Fidel Edwards, Cottrell, Ashley Nurse, and Dwayne Bravo, all missed the wickets, thus handing a 2-0 win to South Africa.
