Team Australia captain Steve Smith took a diving catch to dismiss Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva on Day 3 (Saturday, February 8) of the ongoing second Test match. Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann ended Dhananjaya de Silva's knock in Sri Lanka's second innings at the Galle International Stadium.

Australia resumed on Saturday morning at 3-330, with Alex Carey and captain Steve Smith at the crease. The duo added 20 more runs before Prabath Jayasuriya broke their partnership. Australia were bowled out for 414 in 106.4 overs, taking a 157-run first-innings lead. Jayasuriya took five wickets for 151 runs.

The dismissal occurred in the 40th over of Sri Lanka's second innings. Dhananjaya de Silva was dismissed off Matthew Kuhnemann's delivery. Smith, who was standing at first slip, took a sharp diving catch after the ball edged off Dhananjaya's bat as he tried to defend against the left-arm spinner.

The on-field umpires sent it upstairs, and the replay confirmed the catch as a clean grab by Smith, who dived to his right and caught the ball with one hand. Dhananjaya was dismissed for 23 runs off 46 balls, with 4 fours. The video of Smith taking the catch grabbed the attention of fans on social media.

Steve Smith Scored His 36th Test Century in the First Innings

Earlier in the match, Steve Smith scored his 36th Test century, equaling Joe Root and Rahul Dravid's record. He reached this milestone in 206 innings, becoming the second-fastest to do so after Ricky Ponting, who achieved it in 200 innings. He is behind Ponting (41) on the list of most hundreds for Australia in Tests.

Smith played a superb knock of 131 runs off 254 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six before being dismissed at 350-4 in the 85th over. The 35-year-old now has 10,271 runs in 116 Tests at an average of 56.74, including 41 fifties and 36 centuries. Notably, Smith scored centuries in both innings he batted in the tour.

Matt Kuhnemann, Nathan Lyon Run Through Sri Lanka's Batting Line-up

Matt Kuhnemann struck twice after lunch, dismissing Pathum Nissanka (8) and Dimuth Karunaratne (14), who was playing his final Test match. Nathan Lyon removed Dinesh Chandimal (12), adding to Sri Lanka's struggles. Lyon also picked up in-form batter Kamindu Mendis, who scored 14 runs off 35 balls.

Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis stabilized the innings with a crucial sixth-wicket partnership. At the time of writing, Sri Lanka was 173/5. Mathews was batting on 64 off 123 balls, with three fours and one six, while Mendis had scored 28 off 27 balls. The hosts had a lead of 15 runs in their second innings.
