Watch: Tilak Varma buries the hatchet with Jamie Overton after ugly fight in MI vs CSK clash
Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Jamie Overton appear to have settled their differences ahead of the two teams' IPL 2026 clash on May 2.
The two had gotten into a verbal spat earlier this season during MI's loss to CSK at the Wankhede Stadium.
Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton's spat
During MI and CSK's first match of this season, on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium, Varma and Overton got into a verbal spat.
The incident seemed to be triggered when Tilak Varma attempted a run, but Overton backed up at the stumps on the same side where Varma was running. Tilak seemed to be agitated that Overton was blocking his view of the fielder.
Heat. Pressure. Drama 😤

Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton reconcile
In a video posted by the Mumbai Indians on their social media handles, Varma called out to Overton during the teams' practice session and asked him if things between the two were good.
Overton responded in the affirmative.

Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton in IPL 2026
Even though Varma and Overton burying their hatchet is one thing to get out of the way, there are much bigger things to worry about.
Despite a century and a highest score of 101*, Tilak Varma has managed just 188 runs in 8 matches at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 169. Instability in his batting position has also contributed to these inconsistent returns.
After starting the season in the top order, Varma has now transitioned to a lower middle order/finisher role, a role that he played for India in T20Is as well.
Amid CSK's middle-order struggles, Jamie Overton has been a rock in their lower order, already carrying out multiple rescue jobs.
So far, he has made 136 runs in 7 matches at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 158 with a highest of 43*. With the ball, he is currently CSK's second-highest wicket-taker.
In 7 matches, Overton has taken 9 wickets at an average of 20.55 and an economy of 9.73 with best figures of 4/18.
MI and CSK in IPL 2026
Both teams have won the IPL title five times each, but that hasn't stopped them from struggling this season.
MI have 2 wins in 8 matches while CSK have 3 wins also in 8 matches. Both teams are in the bottom four of the points table.
CSK have already beaten MI once this season, and MI are currently on a two-match losing streak. MI's early accumulation of losses has also dented their net run rate severely.
CSK will hope that they can get back to winning ways, especially against a team struggling the way MI are.
