Suryakumar Yadav is one of the best T20I batsmen in the world and he proved it once again on Tuesday (August 8) by playing a match-winning knock during the third T20I between India and West Indies in Guyana.
Set a target of 160 runs, Team India needed to win the game to keep the series alive. With the team low on confidence after suffering defeats in the first two games of the series, they needed a good start from their openers. However, debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill failed to deliver at the top.
While Jaiswal’s debut T20I knock ended for just 1 run, Gill managed to score only 6 off 11 balls. But before West Indies could make further inroads in the game, Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the innings. He walked out to bat on the fifth ball of the first over and made his intentions clear by hitting the remaining two balls of the over for a four and a six.
There was absolutely no looking back after that for the world’s number-one T20I batsman. By the time the powerplay came to an end, he was batting on 36 off just 18 balls. Suryakumar Yadav completed his fifty off just 23 balls and went on to smash 83 runs off 44 balls.
His blazing knock was studded with 10 fours and four sixes. Suryakumar Yadav also shared a crucial match-winning partnership of 87 runs with Tilak Varma who remained unbeaten on 49. India eventually crossed the finishing line in the 18th over with seven wickets in hand.
Tilak Varma reveals Suryakumar Yadav’s secret:
After the game ended, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav interviewed each other. In a video posted by BCCI on their website, the batsmen talked about the game and their respective batting performances. During the candid conversation, Tilak Varma also made an interesting revelation. He gave an insight into what makes Suryakumar Yadav such a good batsman in the shortest format of the game.
“It was written on Surya bhai’s wrist band that to take some time in the powerplay to settle. But, he ended up hitting boundaries from the very first ball, I did not understand that at all,” Tilak said.
“Sometimes it is important to introduce a bluff from your own side as well. I fooled myself while walking out to bat. I initially thought that I would take some time in the middle to settle down and then slowly pick up in the middle overs. After I hit the first couple of balls, then I thought about the team’s requirement and decided to bat in my usual fashion and not try to do something different,” Suryakumar responded.
Varma revealed that Suryakumar Yadav came out to bat with a message written on his wristband. Varma also revealed the message that was written on the band, saying that his senior teammate had written the message for himself to play cautiously in the powerplay. Well, the right-handed batsman did not pay much attention to the message and went on to play the big shots right from the start.
