Australian all-rounder Tom O'Connell found himself embroiled in a rare incident during a recent match of the Bangladesh Premier League 2024-25 season. Tom O'Connell was dismissed twice in the same game as he was initially ruled out for being timed out before being dismissed on the very next ball.

Khulna Tigers set a target of 204 runs in 20 overs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday, December 31. William Bosisto scored an unbeaten 75 off 50 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. In response, the Chittagong Kings struggled during the powerplay, losing five wickets in just 6.1 overs.

Tom O'Connell was ruled out for being timed out after a delay in his arrival at the crease. He walked to bat at No. 7 following Haider Ali's dismissal. Khulna Tigers' captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz took the issue up with the umpires. O'Connell was adjudged timed out by umpires Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed.

However, Mehidy reconsidered the decision and gestured for O'Connell to return, showing great sportsmanship. The umpires then allowed him to bat in the game. The drama didn't end there, as O'Connell was dismissed on his first ball from Mohammad Nawaz. This sequence of events left commentators in disbelief.

"No one expected such a flurry of wickets to fall," said the commentator.

FanCode took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the video with the caption, "Timeout drama in #BPL! 😵 Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz sportingly called Tom O'Connell back after he was timed out by the umpires! 🤝"

The umpires ruled O'Connell out under clause 40.1 of the BPL regulations. According to 40.1 of the Laws of Cricket, "after the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out."

Personally Feel Miraz Did a Fantastic Job - Mohammad Mithun

Chittagong Kings captain Mohammad Mithun lauded Mehidy Hasan Miraz for his sportsmanship in calling back Tom O'Connell, who had been timed out. Mithun admitted that it was within the rules for the fielding side to appeal, but Miraz’s gesture showed a big heart.

"I personally feel Miraz did a fantastic job. He showed that he has a big heart. It is within the rules for the fielding side to appeal. Credit to Miraz for letting [O'Connell] return to the crease," Mithun said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"The batter shouldn't be late to the crease, particularly in a T20. He was a little late in getting ready. Probably he was a little relaxed when he was getting ready, maybe he didn't realise that we would lose wickets so quickly. That's what made him late. Nothing else."
