The 33-year-old India National Cricket Team mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy castled the 28-year-old New Zealand National Cricket Team all-rounder Glenn Phillips on Sunday, March 9.

Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Glenn Phillips at a crucial stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium to leave New Zealand reeling at 165/5.

Varun Chakravarthy cleans up Glenn Phillips

Phillips came out to bat in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after the dismissal of Tom Latham. New Zealand were struggling when Phillips arrived in the middle and the all-rounder batted responsibly.

He didn't play his natural attacking brand of cricket and adopted a cautious approach in the match. Phillips was struggling against spinners, but he spent quite some time in the middle to stabilise the New Zealand innings.

Glenn Phillips scored 34 runs off 52 balls, with 2 fours and 1 six, before getting out and he was involved in a crucial 57-run stand with Daryl Mitchell in 87 balls.

Notably, Phillips fell to Varun Chakravarthy in the 38th over of the innings. The Indian spinner bowled a slow tossed-up delivery on the 5th ball of the over.

The ball turned back in to beat the big cut of Phillips and sneaked through the big gap between bat and pad to destroy the stumps. After picking up the wicket, Varun Chakravarthy was absolutely pumped up and he roared in celebration.

Well, India are favourites without question - Michael Atherton

Speaking a day ahead of the Champions Trophy final, the former England skipper Michael Atherton stated that Team India would enter the summit clash as favourites, considering the quality of players in their line-up, but was optimistic of New Zealand giving them a tough fight.

"Well, India are favourites without question. They're unbeaten in the tournament. They're playing at the ground where they've had lots of exposure here, whereas New Zealand have gone to Pakistan for their semi-final and come back," he said on Sky Sports.

"And India are a complete team. It is hard to look at that team and think of any weaknesses. They've got an aggressive and good opening partnership.

"They've got the best ODI player in the history of the game at number three. They've got an in-form Shreyas Iyer at four. Then they've got a whole host of all rounders that give them both variety with the ball and depth with the bat.

"And Mohammed Shami's return means that they haven't really missed Jasprit Bumrah that much. So it is a complete team. Rohit Sharma's win percentage record in ODI cricket as India's captain is 75 percent.

"So that tells you how good they've been for a long period of time. But it's a final. It's a one off game. You know, teams can be slightly below their best. And as Nass (Nasser Hussain) said, you'd expect New Zealand to be there or thereabouts. Have India favourites, but it's by no means a foregone conclusion," he added.
